not sure about car prices but he's referring to UK power cost going up 5 times and people ditching their EVs and going back to ICE.

maybe he means EVs are a lot more expensive than ICEs

Except both arguments don't bare scrutiny.

The UK's electricity supply landscape differs markedly from ours with 38% of it derived from natural gas. The response by so many NZers to power increases of anywhere that magnitude would see PV uptake go ballistic. We are after all a very ingenious nation.

The prices of EVs are dropping week by week due to manufacturing advances and market competition. As stated above we are already seeing parity with ICEVs in some car sizes and together with the massive difference in running and particularly energy (fuel) costs this will only further accelerate EV uptake in the medium term.

I'm happy to see a bit of skepticism in this thread. I'm all for electrification, but I have serious doubts that the current generation of EVs are the answer we're looking for.

Yep - I'm all for a bit of healthy scepticism in many, many areas. Especially when backed with [good] references (as freitasm says) even if it is ultimately wrong as it provides good learning opportunities. Some of the rubbish that's being spouted here reads as having political motivations rather than being anything to do with scepticism.

I'm pretty sure if Tiwai point was shut down we'd suddenly have a massive surplus of hydro energy. That's capacity sorted for awhile. And it's already built! Not sure if it's connected to the rest of the grid, but hey, surely easier to do that than build another dam.

I'm sure this is caused by deforestation. But I'm not a climate scientist. It just makes sense. Forests breathe carbon dioxide. Burning forests is a double punch and is doomed our planet.

I appreciate your perspective on the challenges that New Zealand faces in adopting electric vehicles (EVs) and transitioning to renewable energy.

Its a very slow transition. EV demands will have an effect but its slow. I see no issue with developing extra green energy to match that new demand

As a poor country with a small population and terrible current account deficits we are in no position to spend several hundred billion on upgrading our energy infrastructure to attempt to shift our combustion energy consumption onto the mains grid?

EV's have terrible range and are hideously expensive in upfront cost, they're about to get RUC and seriously mean sky rocketing cost of electricity.

They're also bleeding edge right now, NZ cannot afford to lead, we are a zero manufacturer of this tech and need to slow right down on deficit spending beyond our means. We need to wait, do the cheap, EV's easy gains and once the tech matures and drops in price.

Once Toyota in 2028 launches superior battery range and others the price will then be the largest issue. To replace quality vehicles like Outbacks and Hiluxes with quality, trustworthy suppliers we are going to be in the 2030's.

Bankrupting the country to try to virtue signal to a world that doesn't care about NZ's economy is foolish.

Oh dear. EVs power usage wont bankrupt NZ. Finally there are a nice range of EV options.
