I find it amazing that as apparently intelligent human beings we have to complicate the way we do things when there's a proven system already in place.

We seem to have a fascination with apps.

Agree 100%. RFID fob is so much more dependable than apps, so I always buy/set it up. I've had apps and phones let me down so many times.

Seldom used but mission critical charging app that requires updating EVERYTIME you want to use it. Then taking an age to update and then re-entry of credentials that you probably forgot.
Data not working.
Phone updating.
Phone flat & charging cable not in car.
QR code not working cos faded/scratched/too bright/too dark/raining/graffiti.
Charger lost its data connection to the app system (well that one helped since it still accepted fob's when no-one else in the que had one).

That still requires setting up and having an account, which isn't needed to buy petrol. I get why companies do it that way, but don't agree with it.

Scott3:

jonathan18: So I took a Mach-E GT for a quick test drive this afternoon; apparently the last one (of any spec) they have for sale at this dealership, having sold 15 this month. Must say, I’m tempted… and my wife’s almost encouraging, keen on the idea of being able to shed any connection to Musk!

I found the driving position/comfort really good; heaps better rear visibility than the Y as well. While nearly not as direct steering as, and more body roll than, the Tesla, I could more than cope with this as the ride is not nearly as bone-jarring, Didn’t get to try it out on a windy road, which can be a telling thing. But the acceleration - kind of crazy but so much fun… While the 0-100 is impressive, what’s more useful is the stupidly fast transition from say 80-120. I could get used to that.

Rear leg room definitely not as good, and the biggest kicker is the boot is way smaller. (The banana box test really don’t demonstrate the difference in a meaningful way, as it’s such a large unit; eg the comparative size of the side compartments in the rear (which don’t really exist in the Ford), or the under-boot space.)

I think it I didn’t already have the Y I could get used to the reduced space, but it’s most definitely a step backwards now. Plus my youngest is ruling it out, simply on not being able to watch YT etc. That said, may go take another look tomorrow with my wife, just in case she falls in love with it…

Are the still offering the pricing in the below stuff article ($65k for the GT?)

Glad you got a test drive. I went to a dealer today to be told that all the deals have finished. When I said there a few still out there I had found in the South Island I was told ‘to and buy that one then’! I asked if I could test drive a used model only to be asked ‘are you going to buy it?’ I said not without a test drive, no. ‘You can’t test it if you are just going to buy one on line…’. At this point I told him to forget it and walked off. Unbelievable!

What a prick of a salesperson. Name and shame the dealership.

What @rseholes. I faced a similar level of preciousness from a car dealer (Mitsubishi in PN), when the new Outlander PHEV was released. Unless I was seriously committed to buying it then they wouldn’t let me test drive it. I vowed at that point never to buy from that dealer; even if I’d decided to go with the Outlander later on I planned to buy from elsewhere. Luckily that never came to pass as I saw sense and went fully EV…

By contrast, Ford in PN were absolutely fine about taking the Mach E for a test drive; really un-pushy as well, but I guess given they only have one more to sell…

Sadly, my wife agreed the boot of the Mach E is too small, but other than that she really liked it; thought it could be a good option when we’re child-free. I’m sure someone else will snap it up, assuming they will continue to offer it at that price.

I suppose it must be a bit disheartening for them spending their working day preaching the advantages of the latest fossil fueled vehicle only to have a customer arrive on the forecourt who doesn't give a toss about all the latest combustion tech and only wants to check out the 'appliance' over there that the dealership's workshop won't be seeing again for a couple of years plus and then only for a cursory inspection. Must make them feel like typewriter salesmen I guess.

I have had very good experience with test driving Teslas as well. I even told them in Norway (a few years ago) that I was looking at buying in New Zealand so was only interested in seeing how it drove, and they were perfectly OK with it. I have never been refused test drives at Tesla

The dealership mentioned earlier should have been able to facilitate a test drive and getting the car up from the South-Island IMHO if there was a sale, if they had any notion of customer service. But maybe it was at a different dealership chain?

I find it amazing that as apparently intelligent human beings we have to complicate the way we do things when there's a proven system already in place.

Why the need for apps to pay for one form energy to power your motor vehicle when there is a proven well accepted model already in place for other forms of energy?

Apps give the supplier an ability to gather information about you and your behaviour. Hopefully to improve / tailor the service offering. Unfortunately some companies sell the data they collect about you.

So far I've been very happy with the payment methods available to me. I don't see how an app will improve that. I don't need any Tom, Dick or Harry having data about me.

Most of these types of apps could be done as a webb app anyway, and that way be OS agnostic and not clutter up your device with a plethora of apps.

Whats another app? I can fit more than I have already. A couple of the apps here dosen't even have anything to do with paying for charging.

Not in NZ, and not legal in NZ as far as I'm aware.

If that floats your boat all well and good. I don't need apps just for the sake of them, especially if there's other less hassle ways of doing the job which in this case there is.

Most users do not click through to the T&C. If the T&C mention it then it is legal. I did check ChargeNet - they do not sell user data. Other companies in NZ most certainly do, how do you think the direct to consumer model works otherwise .
