Now that Honda e:n1 is about to arrive in NZ - at an apparently good price - how would you compare it with a BYD Extended range? BYD has their (better) Blade battery technology, but apart from that??

Have they said what Battery Tech they are using in the Honda? Is it LFP or NMC?

The motor is juiced by a 96-cell 68.8 kWh nickel manganese cobalt (NMC) battery

Charge speed seems very low. 40 mins for 30% to 80% - That is below a 1C rate.

Not like the leaf and not cooling it are they?

I'd prefer a proven BYD over an unknown Honda EV any day. It will be Honda getting their pencils out first imo. I'm not expecting a big impact.

For someone already buying from Honda it will be an easy add.

Hard to say. On the one hand shiny new expensive long range EVs probably don't need as much infrastructure as they can travel longer distance and charge faster. However they are not affordable for a majority of vehicle owners so more infrastructure is required to encourage adoption.

On the other hand a feebate system does help to change buying behavior and once the demand is there the market typically provides the goods.

Yeah, that's where I stand on this issue. The Invisible Hand of the Free Market is not, as David Seymour believes, the true god that will save us all, but it can (and arguably does) certainly drive commercial outfits to provide charging networks they can make money off of. At least now that there's a critical mass of EVs on the road.

If a feebate system is what we had under the previous government then yes it certainly did, in that a load of crap vehicles were brought into the country that would otherwise be viable. I remember seeing auctions on Trade Me for 3 to 4 bar Leafs that made sense only because they could be bought for less than the rebate.

EVs, both new and second hand, are substantially cheaper these days.

I suspect Basil is conflating cheap second hand Leafs listed on Trade Me with newly imported Leafs. The rebate only applied to EVs on their first registration/owner in NZ so the end of life ones being flicked off on TM didn't qualify.

Granted the rebate made for some good value EVs on the lower end of the market. We updated our 1st gen 24kWh Leaf to a 30kWh with more practical range just before the CCD was canned for that reason. $6,000 to update in our case. So much for the CCD benefitting only rich folk.
