Group PSA, the French company that makes Peugeot, Citroen and DS automobiles is buying Opel and Vauxhall - General Motors European divisions.

They intend to start sales of Opel/Vauxhall cars outside of Europe.

I can't imagine that Holden will be selling European built Astras in competition with the same car being sold as an Opel (or Vauxhall) model.

I am wondering how this will play out for Holden. Perhaps they will just end up with GM cars out of the US and Korea.

It sounds like it's almost a done deal. In the short term I imagine that GM will have an ongoing arrangement to badge engineer Opel product but Mary Barra has indicated that she wants GM to chase profits over market share, so I wouldn't be surprised if they eventually scale back in this part of the world over the long term.

I suspect that GM probably wants to put more R&D into electric cars, which could make their American product more appealing in the Australasian market.

Yep, it's a done deal. Just got a press release stating that.

General Motors Co. (NYSE:GM) and PSA Group (Paris:UG) today announced an agreement under which GM’s Opel/Vauxhall subsidiary and GM Financial’s European operations will join the PSA Group in a transaction valuing these activities at €1.3 Bn and €0.9 Bn, respectively.

Maybe GM is bailing out on the tighter emissions standards in the EU and retreating to their Trump-smog base in the US?

Holden is just a nameplate and has been for quite a while now - Probably makes very little difference. They can just buy product and stick their label on it - instant Holden.

What is now a little odd, is the way General Motors has such a fragmented brandname. Apart from possibly GMC trucks - nothing directly has the GM name on it - In many respects they might appear more of a force if they dropped their 'loacl' brandnames (Holden,Vauxhall,Chevrolet etc etc) and just sold worlwide as GM (or call them all Chevrolets for that matter).

When Opel used to be sold in NZ (early 90's) we had a few on of the little hatchbacks in the rental fleet.  I quite liked them.  Weird gearbox feel, but nippy little cars.

They did put GM DAEWOO on cars for a bit, which I thought was a bit weird. Now those are just holdens anyway. Crappy little slow holdens.

Wouldn't go down well in AU as they would stop buying cars before they would buy a GM vehicle that wasn't called a Holden.  You know  "What's good for Holden is good for the world" metality

Remember here in NZ in the late 80s  they put the name of Pontiac  on small GMs   before the edict went out from Australia that "Holden Rulze" so you kiwis better fall in line.

Yes, there was a particular Daewoo model sold in NZ by GM in the late 80s and early 90s under the badge 'Pontiac Le Mans'.
