I'm not sure why karma comes into it?

People love to hate on The Hosk.

I'm primary issue with him is he is a boring commentator.

When reading his articles it's the same thing over again. National good labour bad, councils incompetent, the world is too PC, anyone who thinks differently is a looser.

Even if you disagree with the political leanings of a commentator, a good commentator should raise interesting points and have some self criticism.

I struggle to remember such things in his pieces.

I agree.  But it's the equally predictable reactions to what he says that I find entertaining.

Oh dear.

A week ago, Mike Hosking was making a point about speed limits.  His argument was sound, but he got a little carried away in his estimation of his own abilities.

Since joining Hampton Downs and taking my car round a track at 220km/h I have not crashed, will not crash, and have concluded I am vastly less likely to be in trouble on a track than I am on a road.

In the media business, making predictions like that is often considered to be invoking the "commentator's curse".  And it seems that Karma was listening intently to Mike's proclamation.

Mike Hosking crashes $140,000 sports car

...at least he's taking it with good humour ;-)

He wasn't doing anything wrong, that sort of speed isn't illegal and also perfectly reasonable off road on a racetrack. Moreover, his "abilities" aren't directly relevant as it is reported that his brakes failed - in fact I think he did pretty well to come away with such low damage, after being caught in a corner at that speed with no brakes.

I'm not sure why karma comes into it?

No one has said he did anything wrong. It is very common in life, when you taunt somebody, and then the same fate happens to you. Very common (don't ask me how I know! ask my kids they will tell you). Social media/urban dictionary calls such an event "karma".

I was going to say "I wonder why?" - but the answer is too obvious.

Because he is really good at winding people up and they take the bait. Every. Single. Time. I don't have much respect for The Hosk's intellect but he sure does know how to wind up the hand wringers.

But I also agree he should have had better brakes.  $10k might have bought him a decent brake upgrade.

In my opinion, the cause was probably "brain failure" - not "brake failure".

It seems he had a brake failure of some description, which I think probably lets him off the hook a bit if so, since it isn't related to his actions.

I'm not familiar with the car he was driving, so I have no idea if it is intended for race track use.

Brake failure is quite often a result of brain failure - i.e. not managing the brakes well.

It's an Alfa Romeo. Failures are features.

I expect the thought of preserving his self-image as a flawless social justice warrior for the privileged classes was "top of the mind" when coming up with the very lame brake failure excuse.

Exposing himself as not being "better" than other clueless petrolhead bogans doesn't match the image.

Well, live by the sword, die by the sword. For those who fail to understand, Let's put it factually, no opinions needed.

Premise 1 as stated by ninja: crashes are not caused by speed, they are caused by idiots.

Next day, ninja crashes.

Refer Premise 1, stated by ninja.

Oh you mean ninja is wrong? Then Premise 1 is wrong? Then everything else he's ever said is wrong? No? Then refer Premise 1.

End of discussion.

His missus has started writing op-ed's in the newspaper, and they are actually very good.

Given his "missus" has been in the news industry since 1995 and has a Political Studies degree, it's not surprising she can write.

Personally I wouldn't make an association between a politics degree and being able to put two sentences together and I certainly wouldn't associate having been a reporter with having interesting opinions.

Kate Hawkesby has always struck me as a good journo.  It's a shame for NZ she doesn't do more (but totally her choice).

I am surprised such a minor incident can grab front page news in the Herald. Whats the world coming to.  Most of us couldn't give a stuff about this guy or any other mouthy media people.

He's always putting his head above the parapet so people love to have a swipe.  Herald knows it will capture people's curiosity and appeals to that part of human nature that likes to see people brought down a notch or two.

Have a look at Rudman's bitter, puerile, sarcastic little effort. Rudman likes to take the bus and despises cars and right wingers. The Horrid should consider putting the old duffer out to pasture.
