Batman: Does anyone know how much these things cost to service? Say a late model v8 rs4?

10% of the value gives you a good idea.

10% on maintenance is a general rule for anything that needs preventive maintenance.

$15,000 every year to change oil and brake pads?

*I take it that you mean per annum, it's definitely not 15k over 15 years as a single 100,000k service could rack up 15k alone depending on what needs to be done.

Yes per annum and yep it includes all but some parts are only changed every couple of years like suspension/bushings/timing belt/tyres.

You may not spent these 15 000 dollars every year but if you spread the cost that is what it's will likely cost you.
