I just read this, didn't see the word EV mentioned. The big issue is agriculture which is quite clear

The growth in transport emissions and the failure to budge agriculture emissions were concerning, Massey University Emeritus Professor Ralph Sims said.

 

"It is deeply concerning that New Zealand has not been able to 'bend the curve downwards' in that our annual greenhouse gas emissions keep rising," he said. 

 

"Overall we have a major problem to resolve rapidly."

 

Technological innovations to reduce agricultural emissions were likely still decades away, he said, and government intervention to encourage low-emissions vehicles was "long overdue"

 

 

Which we all agree.  The article centered around agriculture. The only mentions being a one liner and last, probably shows the need. It should have been most of the article? It was a late one liner? Off course we want to address transport emissions. He said low emission vehicles not EV's. To start with EV's have not been available in NZ as new until very recently, so how can that be long overdue? RUC has been here for a while that is a measure, and significant financially at 70c per litre or roughly 70c per 10km. Thats quite significant

 

But we need to address all emissions, the large emitters are more important, and you need to look at what can be addressed relatively quickly

Linuxluver: There are many things we COULD do to reduce transport emissions rapidly, but people would need to vote for parties with those policies. So far, the proportion who vote for action on Climate change isn't a decisive majority. That National still poll 40% -ish on a "talk but do nothing" stance is a huge reason why not much is happening. That needs to change or not much will change.

 

National wont do anything. Labour isn't. Green's have no clue.

 

I still dont get why aiming for 100% renewable is a problem. Yes, I know they say it will cost more, that's too bad, All climate change issues will cost more. If you want to be green and get solar that will cost more. get an EV that will cost more. Do thing that will cost more

 

There is no will in NZ. Trains , public transport, that is a big option, but no, ChCh is putting bus fares up. What a joke

From the above:

 

Stats NZ says household emissions increased by 19.3 percent between 2007 and 2017, mainly due to rising emissions from road transport.

 

Massey University sustainable energy and climate mitigation Professor Emeritus Ralph Sims said the findings were "deeply concerning" and New Zealand had a major problem.

 

However, Climate Change Minister, James Shaw, said he wasn't surprised that household emissions were in fact tracking up. He also said:

 

"Our work on promoting electric vehicles will also allow households to free themselves up from carbon-intensive transport."

 

So it looks like the Green Party will be working hard to promote electric vehicles, including hopefully, the announcing soon of Government incentives for buyers of electric vehicles.

True, but a report from Stats NZ which says household emissions increased by 19.3 percent between 2007 and 2017, mainly due to rising emissions from road transport, just might stir the politicians into action over EV buying incentives! 

 

Well, at least James Shaw is still saying that the uptake of EVs in NZ needs attention, so I think I'll hold off buying my new EV for a little while yet!

I'm looking at buying a NZ-new EV, but I haven't decided yet which one I will buy. At least there is more choice now than when I first started looking!

 

There is another article on the topic linked to earlier here which said that Stats NZ reported that household emissions jumped 19.3% from 2013 to 2017, mainly due to rising emissions from road transport. In this article, it says:

 

Sims said the continuing growth in overall transport emissions was largely due to Kiwis' love of the car.

 

"Given that annual SUV sales continue to grow, and the life of a car is 15 to 20 years, government intervention is long overdue to encourage the purchase of low-emitting vehicles," he said.

 

"The present policy to encourage electric vehicles is a mere token and a lot more is needed to penalise the large emitters and hence reduce demand for such vehicles."

 

Well done Professor Ralph Sims, the more experts who can give this message to Government, the better!

Funny how academics, particularly those whose paycheck comes from promoting one side of the discussion, favour punishing people's behaviour.
Never mind finding a bunch of carrots, just get a bigger stick.

Well, the clean up bill for those choices is pretty high.  Should all tax payers pay for that individuals decision or should the person responsible for it pay for it?

Governments seem to favour a one-size-fits-all stick. I drive an old inefficient ICE car. I am a pensioner and I can't afford anything better. But I only drive it once every couple of weeks for shopping trips. My emissions are negligible, especially compared to a daily commuter. For me the fairest stick would be an added tax on petrol, since that would at least penalise actual use. A substantial penalty tax merely for owning such a car would be grossly unfair and I imagine I would not be the only one in this position.

I'd be surprised if they went after already purchased vehicles. I think the more likely scenario is they apply whatever "sticks and carrots" to new vehicles OR to the fuel. I think the fuel option is something for later down the road and a good start would be going after new vehicle purchases first. Going after the fuel right away would be hard to gain support on since that's kind of pulling the rug out from under peoples feet suddenly.  Applying a stick to purchases of new vehicles at least lets people make an informed decision with a possibility of avoiding it.

You need to read further, its emissions based not EV based, although EV's to mid level get a larger benefit. RUC to come off has has not been successful
