I just hired one to go and get lunch. I took the long way there and it was great fun.

This probably shouldn't make me smile but it did.

Saw a surly yoof on an electric scooter yesterday (Wellington, not branded, so I assume it was his). Complete with hoodie up and faint wisp of hair on upper lip. He was being a bit of a boof head, accelerating stupidly in a crowded shopping area with kids about.

Then he got his comeuppance when he drove straight into a pole.

Not a big pole either, like a 6 cm wide pole holding a temporary bus stop sign. I doubt he could have managed it again if he tried.

Then he slunk away as everyone laughed at him.

Speaking of Boofheads,

Some dopey reporter claims the first "injury"

"I was reaching into my pocket for something, and it felt like it applied the brakes and then I went over the handlebars."

I watched some guy weaving through pedestrians in pedestrian area on a Lime at 25kmh yesterday. Racing for the train probably.

Ive only made them beep when around people so far. Not had a need to use one when it has been around. If one was outside work I would possibly take it to the lunch bar and back but that is about it.

The (now expired) listing for the Mi M365 scooter on Container Door (https://www.containerdoor.com/nz/catalog/xiaomi-m365-folding-electric-scooter) says this is the same model that Lime has been using in California - is it the same one they're using here and in Akld?

They're certainly not a bad looking product, and seeing that listing has made me interested in getting one (I live in a flat city, so how they manage hills isn't a big issue) - if Lime is using the same model I could try one of them out when I'm in Akld next, and as mentioned on the Mi store thread hopefully the new shop will sell them too.

Are there any other models of affordable e-scooters that people would recommend?

25 is pretty close to the max these things do, they don't really get up there unless going full speed on a flat or downhill. If he was weaving properly then he was def doing less than 25.

My wife was nearly run over by one on the way to the bus station earlier this week. The driver blew through a bunch of people cussing them out for using the walkway, and knocked her purse nearly out of her hands. Needless to say, she's not a fan at all. It was probably a one off, but that's all it's going to take for some people. Especially with some driving like an idiot like this guy was. This was all on the walkway in the cbd during a crowded time. Hopefully no one gets seriously hurt by one of these morons.

I was sent a Facebook screenshot by a colleague of an organised(?) event already being set up to do a Lime Scooter race in AKL's eastern bays.

I'd say this will become more regular and the accidents will likely come from these informal "events" where you have a number of scooter riders racing one another and trying to get ahead by fair means or foul.

Interesting.

Surely the point here is not the precise speed, but that weaving through pedestrians at speed is unsafe and inconsiderate.
