Thanks for this. I've just put my order in - while the deal doesn't close for 12 days, I was a bit concerned if I held off before ordering as it looks like 13 out of 20 available had sold, and apparently the deal will close before the end date at the point all are sold. (Or this could just be a classic online seller rouse, to encourage people to avoid FOMO?).

 

While there were a bunch of things l wasn't too keen on with the Lime scooters, I think I'll get my value for money with the Mi one, given it's only $714. There are a few suggested minor mods that can be made to the Mi scooters, including a revised firmware that increases maximum speed from 25 to 30kmh, and others that improve design issues (eg wearing of joints).

 

Where I live is very unlikely to get one of these commercial operations like Lime, so I'm comfortable our streets won't be inundated - but given it's so flat here it's a perfect place for an e-scooter. I look forward to using it to get to work and, unlikely a bike, I'll get there without being sweaty and needing a shower!

Looks like New Zealand is the perfect place to deploy this kind of scooters since any sort of accidents or extra expenses are covered by the tax/rate payers instead of being the responsibilities of the company, even though they know they are allowing those behaviors eg. not banning people not wearing helmets etc.

The scooters are accessed via smartphone app, typically for $1 to unlock and then $0.15 per minute afterwards. (Some have already ended up in Oakland’s Lake Merritt, seemingly in protest.)


Lime is getting sued in the US specifically because are avoiding those responsibilities

Several Californians have sued electric scooter companies Bird and Lime, alleging that the startups have been negligent and are responsible for physical injuries or blocking of handicapped parking spaces.
The proposed class-action lawsuit, Borgia et al. v. Bird Rides Inc. et al., which was filed last Friday in Los Angeles county court, raises a question that has been at the heart of this ever-expanding business model: who is responsible for making sure that riders obey not only existing traffic laws but company policies as well? And if anyone gets hurt by the scooter, who pays?


"Under the draconian user agreements, riders who download it—nobody reads it. And the Lime user agreement is 261 cell phone pages; Bird is 58 pages—not one rider I've ever spoken to, not one ever reads [them]. They click whatever they're supposed to click," she said.

"Those user agreements preclude an injury victim from suing Bird for negligence, for gross negligence, [and] for any injuries. [Any one of these agreements] precludes class-action lawsuits—basically the rider gives up all rights. That's not right. A car rental company would not get away with that, and an auto manufacturer could not get away with that."

The saddest thing is the civil engineers spent so much time designing the roads and walkway to be disability friendly and random scooter left in the path completely breaks that.


But sure you get to where you need to go a tad quicker in the end (if you don't have an accident).

Totally. This was the dilemma for me, in having to push 'buy' on the Container Door deal before having a clue what the Mi Store would charge (and even whether it will be available from day one).

 

The other places in NZ selling the Mi seem to sell it for $1000-$1100, and Container Door's doing it for $700; I'm working off the hunch Mi's price will be somewhere in the middle.

I just checked on Batt's website, who import and sell the M365 and they've just slashed their price from $999 to $849. I don't see how they can compete with the Mi store.

Rode on the bird scooters in Nashville. They’re all good except when you go over an unexpected bump and nearly roll your ankle! Never thought about buying one but it’d be a great way to get to work.. might treat myself to one for Christmas

Man, that's so depressing! If I'd known a few hours ago I'd have held off ordering from Container Door, especially since it looks like they offer no ability to cancel an order once made. The price matching is good, but more importantly I'd have had it next month instead of waiting until mid-Jan. Oh well, sh!t happens.

I'd consider it, if i wasn't paying less to park my car... in auckland cbd...

 

 

 

My upper often uses Public transport, His comments were much the same. It would cost him about $3 to take one of these from Britomart to the office, Compared to getting off the train, jumping on a bus at no cost as it's the same stage.

 

When i first heard about it, i thought Public transport would be the major use of this, very quickly realized... It's far more expensive!

 



They have the advantage of being point to point...and faster than walking. You just get off it and walk away. Many rides might be only 10 minutes. Cheaper than Uber.

I'm thinking the rider needs to not be a dick.

If I rented out cars and the driver was bad......the fines go the driver. 

The same should apply here. Any scooter rider who takes out an elderly pedestrian is at fault no matter what because they were going to fast to respond to the conditions. Whoever rented the scooter should be on the hook...even if someone else was riding it (12yo kid.....Mummy paid...so she's on the hook).

I saw about 4 people going down a one way in middle of road last night going in wrong direction.
Light goes green for cars other side, people on scooters had to take evasive action as cars weren’t slowing down and going head on into them.

The police need to start pulling people up, they’re riding them like there’s no rules.

Or is there no rules?

Well yeah in the ideal world people would follow all the miniscule rules, but the realities is that people don't and that's why there are specific laws to encourage or discourage certain behaviors.

Also Lime doesn't go out of their way to ensure the riders are over 18 or have a helmet while car rental places will literally check for a valid drivers license and make sure the seatbelt in the car is available and in working condition.

In the end because the NZ gov didn't lay down those ground rules regarding these safety issues, we are probably going to see more accidents and conflicts between those users and pedestrians.



The funniest part is that all these scenarios are already known and played out in other cities in the US, like in the articles I linked. And yet NZ government is still letting lime to have a go at it with the same setup.



Edit: One more thing that they are doing in the US and NZ might look forward to, eventually you end up with a designated parking area for the scooters so it doesn't block walkways etc.

But then people complains that it's not convenient and still litter those scooters everywhere, while the shop owners/storefront/residents next to those designated scooter parking area get mad because those scooters parking area are taking up available parking spots while people still dont follow those parking rules.

And those accidents keep on happening because doing meaningful crack down on rule breakers from the scooter company's side means reduced user base growth, which is not good for a startup company.
