Linuxluver: I ordered a long range Model 3 this week. They said it should be here end of October. It's Midnight Silver Metallic Grey. It should be able to do 560km. We'll see.

Self Drive??.

also its amazing how a car that was originally touted as $35K USD, quickly becomes +$100K NZD :)

The Standard Plus is $73,800. Pretty good for what you get and 400km range. But I wanted more range. They all come with Autopilot and the hardware for full self driving is there. You can turn it on later for a fee. I'm happy with the autopilot for now.

You aren't offending any Tesla fans... [snip]

Oh, I'm pretty sure you just proved otherwise right there :-)

In any case, you make good points - I do however think that companies that have decades of building many MANY different types of cars (and trucks, vans etc etc) have a better handle on CARS than Tesla do. It's certainly not to say that Tesla isn't making great cars - they are very impressive - especially in their technology.

All I am really saying is that large car companies like money so much that they are not going to let Tesla have that market all to themselves and they have considerable resources to throw at the problem. Perhaps in the same way I am dismissing Tesla as a serious long term automotive contender, you are dismissing the ability of the traditional automotive companies to leverage decades of experience and compete...

Have you ever heard of a large company called Kodak?

Yes I have... And they were a large company that liked money very much that failed to see a change coming and pivot to stay relevant.

There's every chance that there might be one or 2 large car companies that suffer the same fate... But EVERY existing large car company? No, Zero chance.

It's evident that they're struggling to hit parity with Tesla, though. Even Porsche hasn't even been able to make something faster than Tesla's seven year old heavy four door sedan and it's yet to be seen if it's even faster than the performance version of the much cheaper Model 3

Some EU car makers are collaborating on building their own battery factories. I don't think any company that fails to secure battery supply has any long term future. Tesla's second gigafactory will be online in China soon....and no one else outside of China has even one.

They can't scale if they can't guarantee cheapest batteries.

Plus Tesla has$US4.95 billion cash on hand, model y, Semi, pickup and new roadster coming, plus what we don’t know about yet, exponential growth ahead as far as I can tell.

Wow. I just saw one at Auckland Airport! Couldn’t tell which version, but it was blue. Looked great, quite envious.

Got the phone call yesterday - my LR M3 is on the truck and on its way down to me in ChCh - the shipping company has said delivery will be on or before Sept 12th but the Tesla guy said they are very conservative and it should be there well before then. Excited much!!

BTW - he also said they are opening a Tesla service center in ChCh - they have selected the site and it is hopefully going to be up and running by Xmas.

Exciting! When Tesla sent my Model X to me in Chch, they sent it via ship, not truck. It took 8 days and arrived filthy, but Tesla did pay for a clean at CCV Car Grooming who did a great job.

That's exciting! So you've got an AWD LR on the way, not the Performance model without the Performance upgrade?

The Service Center has been on their map as "Late 2019" for a few months now but it's good to hear they're putting a time line on it now. Hopefully that means the other "Late 2019" Super Chargers might actually come online before the end of the year too

Yep it is the Long Range Performance model, without the upgrade.
