The first used Model 3 has hit TradeMe https://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/used-cars/tesla/auction-2350146210.htm?rsqid=0291202c6581412a83565f1651a3bb5c-002

Looking at that advert and the other similar cars listed even at second hand prices they are far far too expensive for this poor Kiwi. People like me will be buying ICE vehicles for a while yet.

Keep in mind that this is the top specced Performance Model 3 with every option. It compares to a BMW M3 in the ICE world.

This is still practically brand new and is the top of the range Model 3. SR+ model 3's will start to pop up in 18 months time or so for sub $50k I would imagine.

When it comes to "cost" of an EV, trying to equate it to an ICE car $ for $ is not as simple as looking at the purchase price of the vehicle. With an EV you're essentially sinking cost into the battery pack that you will get value from over the life of owning the car. Its the CAPEX (batteries) vs OPEX (petrol) argument.

Also, when it comes to choosing a vehicle, saving money isn't always the choice. Often people take into account environmental impact, features and performance when choosing their cars.

To be fair, that car has done only 2000km, so while second hand, it is pretty much brand new. Furthermore that configuration is one of the most optioned available, and would have cost the initial purchaser around NZD116,000.

Also the Tesla model 3 only just started being delivered to NZ, so there is barely any depth available. I would also note that the advertised car is available now, where as, if somebody ordered a new model 3 from tesla, the wait time is a couple of months (it gets built to order in the USA, then shipped to NZ).

I actually think they are no longer built to order. They have simplified the range of options across all regions and now when you place an order, it is taken from the current batch of "that configuration/colour" if available, otherwise you have to wait until another run of that config is produced.

So if you pick a pretty common config/colour you could receive it much quicker than a few months.

I think...

True for Model 3, I think. S and X may still be built to order.

Myth Busting the Tesla Model 3

Leasing.com

Having shocked the world when it was revealed to be the UK's third most popular car in August, and with lease deals available from only £350 a month on leasing.com, it was high time we got in the Tesla Model 3 and busted some myths about the most talked-about new car on the market.

With a range of 254 miles in its Standard Range Plus guise, we sent Howard Ritchie to London to grab a quick go in one and find out what it's actually like to drive.
