$60k budget is a decent amount. You could look into the Outlander PHEV and still have change left, a Skoda Superb wagon or the Kodiaq and Karoq SUV's, the Subaru Forresters/Outback etc etc and all of these come in well under $60k (without options/upgrades) Heck even the Mitsi Pajero Sport is $49,990 drive away. Lots of choice there.

If you are looking at a Forrester I would also look at an Outback.

+1. We are currently on our second Outback and it is highly likely our next will be an Outback as well. I bought our first Outback 4 years ago after test driving Kia Sportage, CX5, Hyundai ix35 and the Forester. When we replaced it last year, I had another drive of a CX5, but the Outback won out again. Well built, drives like it is on rails, well-spec'ed, great fuel efficiency and huge rear cargo area.

Thanks. What year Outback have you got? We are looking at a 2015 model this weekend.

We bought the current model when it came out in 2018. The changes between 2015 and current are face lift (interior trim and some minor exterior changes to mirrors etc) so pretty much the same car. Hope the test drive goes well. We test drove several SUV before buying the Outback and nothing impressed us over the Outback for the same money.

what is op's budget ?

also is he a keen driver or looking for an appliance ?

of all the models mentioned so far, tiguan is the pick for driving.

Sorry not sure what you mean by op's?  Our budget is up to $60k. We'd prefer to spend less of course.

The car is mostly for my wife and child. So safety is a major consideration.  It would be the main car on the weekends and holidays.

The Outback 2.5 Premium is around $50k and is extremely well-spec'ed: full time AWD, key-less entry, heated leather seats, sun roof, electric tailgate, adaptive cruise control, Android Auto/Apple carplay, three exterior cameras (front, side and rear), auto lights and auto wipers (both work great), 8" touch screen.

The safety features are also extensive - electronic stability control, traction control, lane change assist, blind spot detection, rear cross traffic alert, pre-collision braking. For an experiment, I once drove from Waikane to Wellington and let the car do all the braking itself!
