Hello,

I am based in Hamilton. I am looking at 2012-2014 Japan imported Prius with ~80k kms at ~NZD15k budget. Another option is to go for Corolla Auris 1.8 2010-2012 at ~NZD12k. Using fuel economy no. and my commute distance, the Prius saves $800 more than a Corolla Auris 1.8 on fuel in a year driving.

As for the prius, I have worries about the ease of repairing, maintenance and finding help if i problems with the hybrid components in New Zealand.

  1.

Are the hybrid component easily serviceable and repair by independent mechanic or must I go to Toyota Dealer?

  2.

Data and survey shows priuses are very reliable. However if they do fail, they cost a bomb to fix. Is that true?

  3.

Where can I get pre-purchase inspection that include hybrid battery health in Auckland/Hamilton?

My focus is to save money but if the above is problematic, I think it is a no buy.

I like to hear your experience.

Thanks!

Man, you should join the Rideshare (Uber / Ola / Zoomy) facebook groups. Those are the people who know about driving a Prius. 🧐

For that price point, you could get a decent used Leaf. Since it's an EV the maintenance is pretty simple and the fuel savings are even greater.  Depends how far your journeys are, though.

The $15,000 price tag would pay for alot of petrol. A Mitsubishi Mirage can go for as low as $5,000 and doesn't use much more fuel.

I'd sooner get a Honda Grace Hybrid than a third gen Prius. Like most newer vehicles the Prius is an unpleasantly wide car, the Grace isn't.

The Honda Fit Hybrid and Toyota Aqua / Prius C are alternatives to the Aurius. There are two generations of Fit Hybrids, I don't think the older one is worth getting.

Main Toyota dealer will service a Prius just fine.

Geektastic:

I think that's fairly obvious since the Prius is a Toyota and have been around for 20 odd years, they have probably seen a few ;)
