But isn't 30 km radius of where you add pre-paid litres, rather than where you fill up?

How does this work with regional fuel taxes? Would I be able to be within 30km of a station outside of the auckland overpriced fuel zone, buy a whole lot and then fill within Auckland? Is this some scam by Z to get around tax by redefining where and when the sale occurs or what?

This was pretty much exactly my first thought... I always fill up at whatever petrol station is cheapest when I head out of Auckland (got 91 @ 1.77/l not that long ago!) and it seems like this might be a way to try and capture some of that business, but how on earth does it work with regional fuel taxes?? Yeah I'd guess they're linking the sale to the nearest station when the sale occurs and that then gets around the regional fuel tax...

Changed Gaspy's max range to 30km, when searching Waiheke Island the 1st Z that comes up is Z Ormiston Road @ 219.9, so that is a pretty huge saving

According to Z's webpage, there is no Z on Waiheke. I know there is one.

Maybe that's Z's way out of cheap petrol on the island, deny it exists :)

Yeah - it isn't a Z gas shop anymore. I think they sold up to Mobil or caltex? But nah, been gone for a few weeks now. Probably an old cached link to their locator?

No way that government is going to let them get away without paying taxes! We all have to pay, so they're going to get stung somehow. Or else Bridges is going to have a field day with Labour!

It makes no difference for the regional fuel tax, Z are the ones who pay it directly,

Z ( and other fuel sellers) just pay the government based on the number of litres they dispense (sell) within the Auckland boundary, it doesn't matter whether what price the fuel is at the point of sale..

There has been a suspicion for a while that the fuel companies don't actually separately account for the receipts from the Auckland sales, they just stick it all in the company account and just pay the tax based on the Auckland litres sold....

This app is a lovely way for Z to obfuscate fuel prices, so its harder for the commerce commission to demand that they make pricing clearer....

I'm confused of how to use this - I haven't found anything about the ShareTank in the Z app. Where can I actually prepay the litres?

Update your Z App and the shareTank appears at the bottom

Thanks to NPD self serve arriving in Dunedin, the Z just down the road has become pretty competitive on price - this is the petrol station the app finds when I went to add petrol to my share tank.

However without the 6c standard or 10c special discount, NPD is still cheaper .. Have I just not figured out how to get that extra discount, or is it blocked?

EDIT: Read the FAQ on the website; Pumped or fuel dockets are excluded
Maybe I need to read more, but it could be good value if travelling from Dunedin to Queenstown where petrol is historically more expensive. Lock in a good rate in Dunedin, use it in Queenstown

FYI I had to delete the Z app on my iPhone and then download it again to get the latest version with the ShareTank option.
Just going into the App store wasn't showing an update available for it like apps normally would.

Yeah, inability to use 6c/10c off makes this feature not worth it for most people I'd say. Also does anybody know for how long is the pre-purchased fuel valid for (I usually fill up so don't know exactly how many litres will I need).

You can spoof your location but the app will detect it and prevent you from going further. This is also against terms and conditions. However you can still bypass the spoof bypass blocker pretty easily.

I didn't see any draw-down date for the fuel.

In the terms and conditions, the trial may end in which case we have a minimum of 90 days to use it.

We are told that we can then lose it.

The fuel cannot be exchanged or refunded.

Usage conditions - Z App – Sharetank Trial

How the SharetankTrial works

...

3. The App Holder acknowledges that Sharetank is a trial service (‘Trial’)offered only by Z Energy Limited (‘Z’). Trial elements may be changed or discontinued at any time. Fuel litres do not expire during the Trial period, but the App Holder must use their Sharetank Balance within a reasonable period of time after purchase.Z will endeavour to give reasonable prior notice of any material changes to the Trial.  If the Trialis discontinued, the App Holder will be given as much notice as possible (and not less than 90 days) via the email used to register for Z App and (if enabled) a Z App notification.  This notice will alert the App Holder to the time frame available to draw down any remaining Sharetank Balances.  Any Sharetank Balances not completely drawn down at the expiry of the notice period may be forfeited.

...

6. A Sharetank Fuel Balance is held in litres not dollars.  There is no dollar value associated with the Sharetank Balance. Sharetank Balances cannot be sold, refunded or exchanged for cash.

Not sure if new, but I noticed you can earn bonus litres if you buy over 150 litres.
