i heard there are suspension, seats, and driving sensors differences? 

 

 

Tesla hardly ever confirms what changes have been made besides twitter posts from Elon. From what is known only the 2023 Model Y performance model has the slightly better suspension which as per reviewers is still very stiff and thus uncomfortable ride. Luckily for NZ & Australia, the Tesla's here are still coming with the radar/ultrasonic sensors where rest of world only gets Tesla vision which is shockingly bad.

I use it to go to the coromandel every fortnight too and the roads there are very suboptimal at the moment so has been a good test. Also, Waikato expressway has some really bad areas. Don't get me wrong, it's not buttery smooth but no different to any other car riding on 21inch wheels.

Wait, we still have radar?

 

No, the radar hardware has been missing since around April last year, but all cars have had radar disabled since around September.

 

Ultra Sonic parking Sensors (USS) are still present on new NZ cars, unlike in other markets. I suspect this will change by the end of the year though.

Do I think I could buy my 75+ year old mother a model Y and she'd be happy or is it overkill?

 

Barely knows how to use a phone outside of phone and sms. Maybe a little whatsapp 🤣.

 

Driving a Mazda 3 series currently. Values comfort and looks over everything else. Must have a hatchback (for no reason at all). We have been looking at Toyota and Peugeots so far, but everything seems like a lot of money for not a lot of car.

For a non-technical elderly person, you want a car with physical buttons for air conditioning, radio etc. A hybrid is prob the better option for them considering no range anxiety or charging issues to worry about again being non technical.

Good call. I'll get her to take 5-15 minutes to get to know the AC/radio etc and see how that goes. She has a Surface Pro 8 and isn't too bad with it. Just bad on mobiles.

 

She's a one station lady anyway :).

 

No range anxiety. I don't think she cares about that.

My concern would be the overall size.

 

Mazda 3 hatch is 4.46mm long, 1.795 wide & a turning circle of 10.6m (Kerb to Kerb)

 

Model Y is 4,750 mm long, 1,920 mm wide, and whopping 12.1m turning circle.

 

 

 

The model Y is going to be substantially harder to maneuver and park than her current car. Generally that age group (crude stereotypes) favors smaller cars for easy parking.

 

Your would also need to access her ability to learn / tolerate the radically unconventional aspects of the tesla (touch screen everything etc).

 

 

 

My grandfather has the MG ZS EV (pre-facelift), and really likes it. Obviously not as good as the tesla, but around $30k cheaper, much more conventional and comparable size to a Mazda 3 (length of 4314mm, width of 1809mm, 11.2m turning circle.

 

If that is to basic, perhaps the lexus UX300e? They have just released a new version with 450km range with the entry trim coming in under the threshold cap. Stacked with features (Heated & Ventilated seats, power adjust steering column, 10 way power adjust drivers set, Branded many speaker sound system etc.

If she doesn't do long trips, you could look at a couple more options:

 

BMW i3 REX. - Discontinued, but good condition examples from 2021 available in the used market. Amazing car (assuming you don't need easy back seat access & more than 250km range. 125kW RWD, with a tiny external dimensions turning circle of just 9.90 m. Roomest car I have ever owned in the drivers seat. Still miss mine.

 

The Mazda MX-30. Much slammed for it's low power (107kW) and range (224km) for it's price point. But for a buyer who is ok with those stats (and difficult back door access), This means that dealers are dropping their pants to clear their 2022 demonstrators at Just $50k. Would keep the familiar Mazda interface, looks pritty nice, and is actually a touch smaller than a mazda 3. (4.395m long, 1.795m wide, 10.6m turning circule). Looks nice & well appointed too (360 degree camera, frount & rear parking sensors, Bose 12 speaker audio, Adaptive LED headlights, 10 way power drivers seat adjustment.

 

And of course the cools stuff:

 

Mini Electric (BMW i3 bit's put into the always popular mini body).

 

Honda-e (Grey market import from the UK. Looks like nothing else on the road. On second thought its too unconventional with no rear view mirrors etc.

Agree on physical buttons.

 

 

 

Don't think and EV is an issue though. Just form a habbit to plug your car in whenever you get home. No more difficult than charging a cell phone, and avoids the need for fuel station visit's.

 

Range anxiety & public charging are only really matter if you are operating towards / beyond the upper limits of the range of your car for a trip. Suspect elderly people who would have issues with those, will be the same group that don't drive more than say 100km from home...

MG4 when it arrives could be a good option too - hatchback form factor (as opposed to SUV, which the MY is).
