Yeah, it comes with mats, but they’re pretty much the bog standard carpet mats; the ones from Tessories are a much better option as the water (and dirt) doesn’t get soaked into the pile. I’m on holiday with the family and after only four days and lots of rain and puddles my driver’s mat is a gross dirty mess, but a 30 second scrub and hose down it’ll look as good as new. TBH, I’d rank these kinds of mats as one of the best accessories I’ve purchased for our Y (and I’ve bought quite a few!).

So much this! So happy I had the 3D mats from Tessories to change the standard mats with when I got the car home. The stock mats stayed in the car for the trip from Tesla and home and have not been anywhere close to it since.

I REALLY hate the standard mats. The stock driver side mat has velcro that is supposed to keep it in place, but it doesn't (At least not for me, in my experience with several cars with those mats).

Yeah I read somewhere that the mats bunch up quite badly.

Thanks for the tips, and also re the test drive.

One other thing - does Tesla do better pricing at different times on the month etc like other car companies do to clear stock/meet targets etc? Or are they more like the likes of Honda, where the price is what the price is - take it or leave it?

They sometimes do an end of quarter push for sales, so prices of "existing inventory" cars may decrease, or they may throw in a free charger or some other deal sweetener.

The end of June sales were a decent discount with around $4k discount, free mobile connector, and three months of free supercharging.
There are currently no deals going for the end of Q3 sales though.

Further to this, I got an email today from Tessories; 20% off mats for the next week - https://tessories.nz/product-category/flash-sale/

And here’s what they can save the car from! (Note: mine are Ali Express mats; I bought them before Tessories started stocking them)

I wish! The RWD MY aint the fastest blimp out there…

But, nah, it’s more that it was cheaper to have that splash of colour than buying the whole car in red! (At the time it would have taken the price over $80k, so I’d have lost out on the rebate as well as the higher cost of red.)

So we drove one on the weekend. Pretty happy tbh. Felt reasonably natural with no OMG moments. The acceleration could be very addictive and very hard to not end up perpetually with a car with 100km range because of a heavy right foot. haha

I noticed some squeezing from the roof area in the one we drove; likely due to flex?? Is this something that others have as well? We are coming from a CX5 which - at least ours has - has reasonable build quality with minimal rattles and clunks even 10 years after getting it. I hate rattles so just wanting some perspective here; maybe from those that have already racked up some miles in theirs.

Also I saw a headline that a minor change has been released in China now - better acceleration (oooohhhh) and ambient lighting - the question now becomes whether we wait or just get involved now and forever wish we had the flashy lighting and another 1 sec off the 0-100 sprint :\ How long till these things filter through to orders for NZ?

The acceration is very nice - so smooth and effortless.

I think that the acceration boost is only the long range model - is that what you are looking at? - I could be wrong though.

Tesla are continuously changing things without announcing it. Which has it's plusses and minuses.

The car you buy in a few months will not be exactly the same as one now.

The first models didnt have the gigacastings, or heatpumps. They have added that rear parcel cover for AU/NZ in the last couple of months. I understand the external speaker/boombox/pedestrian alert is now installed as standard. Not sure what the status of the Ultrasonic sensors (USS) is for AU/NZ. Tesla want to move to 'Tesla Vision' and have removed them on some variants. Apparently, at the moment that means that car is worse without USS when trying to park. There is talk of the Model Y having a one piece giga casting for the underbody soon. I figured that would be the new model 3 - and they would then flow that through to the revamped model Y next year (Juniper). Who knows. There are seldom official announcements of these things.

Ambient lighting? Can't really think it would be a 'must have', but....

You might find yourself waiting forever because there will always be something new just around the corner.

EDIT: Hmm - Video about upcoming changes - looks like the base model gets a speed/power increase - impressive...

"You might find yourself waiting forever because there will always be something new just around the corner." - totally. I need to commit at some stage as there will always be something new. I suppose the bargain hunter in me is wanting an incentive to buy effectively a vehicle which is lacking these "new features"...hmmm

The acceleration change is across SR and LR variants; so a nice win for everyone :)

Tbh the acceleration is the main thing. The lighting is just a "nice to have" as it brings a little bit of "ohh thats fancy" to the package (but certainly not a deal breaker)

As much as I love my car, I have to acknowledge that, at 13 months old, it makes more unwanted noises than my nine year old Mazda 6 wagon did. I do wonder if this is partly due to the relatively quiet interior of an EV vs ICE. That said, it’s not bad enough to make me regret the purchase, though I’m suffering a bit of FOMO in relation to these recent upgrades - I’d certainly be keen on that bit of extra acceleration, and I’m always a sucker for LED lighting!

I think, though, that unless there’s a specific change/upgrade that is a ‘must have’ for you, then just go ahead and order it; there’ll always be changes (some for good, some for bad - as the Vogels ad said). I didn’t envisage a 10k cut to the price of the Y since I ordered, but then again I’ve had the pleasure of driving it for the last year. The exception for me would be coming up to the release of a more significant refresh, where I would look to hold off. I’ve not read much about this Juniper update, so will be following that with interest…

A few questions (in relation to potentially purchasing):

The roof is nice (ie being glass), but how do people find it in summer? What have people done to mitigate the sun/heat/etc? I see there are some aftermarket sunshades which can be installed - not sure if I like that idea. Its tinted/etc from factory, so there is a reasonable amount of blocking - do people put more tint/film over it again? Or have people found this to be a non issue in NZ?

What are people getting distance wise out of a charge in their Y's? I know this is going to be hugely subjective and dependent on where they are being driven etc, but still keen to get some feedback. Is it better to half the claimed distance or take a 3rd off it or something else to get a real understanding of the distance per charge?

We would be keen on getting a towbar for it - purely for bike rack ( not towing; as I have another car for that) and rubbish bins :D ). Is there anything I should be aware of in this space?

Oh and I am keen on the auto parking features - for that I would need to purchase the enhanced autopilot - is it worth it or any words of warning/insight in this space?

Thanks

@E3xtc This video from an Aussie Model Y owner covers the negatives really well which includes the radiant heat from glass roof and paid auto parking add-on including even the basic autopilot. My work colleague has a Model 3 and he did a road trip from Hamilton to top of North Island last year during summer and everyone felt the heat on their heads, and this was while they were driving. The aircon was a full blast which makes it for a noisier environment. The placement for the aircon vents is also not great which the below video covers very well.

You have to tint the roof which I did and no issues since.

Get ceramic. Works amazing in both winter and summer.

Roof: In the 13 months we've had the car there was only one period of a couple of days where we really benefited from installing a shade; that was in Central Otago in temperatures over 30 degrees. Our shade is in two parts (recommended by many online, as the single-piece ones tend to sag), with each part having a foil component and a netting-type component. I'm glad we've got it on hand for when we need it, but where we live (PN) there's not much need for it. In other parts of the country that could be a different story; similarly, the post above references an Australian video, where temperatures are generally higher. Given the relatively low price of these shades, that they work, and they're relatively easy to install, I personally wouldn't be making a decision as to whether to purchase this car or not based on this criteria! (Note: there are also much more expensive/elaborate shades - check out Hannshow's website or similar.) Oh, we also got the front windows tinted to the max allowed.

Distance on charge: The TLDR answer is 'enough'. Enough to easily get us to our destination via fast chargers. The variables are simply too many so as to make an actual figure meaningless. For local driving I don't think actual range needs to be even contemplated, unless the EV is at a Leaf-like level of range (eg, my wife's old Leaf that could do a claimed 100km in an urban setting). For long-distance trips it comes back to a preparedness to stop to charge. As an example, we drove from PN to Akld and back last week with a packed car - four people and lots of luggage. On the way up to Akld we stopped for a few minutes in Mangaweka; we then charged in Taupo, and again at Bombay - that last charge was more about having the charge for driving around the city over the next week. Did a top-up in K Road during the week, and then on the way back did Bombay and Taupo, arriving back on 5%! None of these were big hassles (apart from Taupo, which is over-used so wait times can be high - will be fixed over time with the new chargers going in at Z and new Tesla chargers going in elsewhere near Taupo).

Towbar: We had one fitted by Mark Buckingham, who does a significant number of the fits on Teslas across the country (he travels most places doing this). It's a very clean install as it's completely covered by the removable panel (which I've lost two of - but at least they're less than $30 to replace!). Towing is effortless thanks to the torque - it's only the noise of the trailer that reminds you you're towing something - but of course it does cut range. Check out relevant FB groups for specific info on range impact, but noting Mark travels the country in his Y, towing a heavy trailer, it's a totally feasible thing to do. For your stated usage - bikes - I don't think there are any issues. I've bought a second tongue to take my sister's bike rack but not even used it yet, but people use racks on Ys and 3s all the time.

Auto parking: Not worth it, especially if that's the primary reason you're buying EAP. It's unreliable and clunky. If you buy the car you'll get a free trial of EAP (we got a month free trial when we were holidaying in the SI - the update occurred WHILE we were driving on a SH and the screen went completely blank!) so you can test it out there. If you're doing a lot of motorway driving the package may be worth it, but otherwise...

While I have a Model 3 rather than a Y, over the last four years the heat from the glass roof has never been enough of an issue for me to get some shades. This is also with black paint and the black interior. I do use a front windscreen shade when I'm parked at work over the summer, though.

I think the better way to look at range is by putting it into driving hours. With the Model Y you will get around 4-5 hours of open road driving - how long do you normally drive before you stop for a break? If your total journey is going to exceed the range, when you need to stop for a break, make the stop somewhere that has a charger and your stopping times won't be any different than a road trip with an ICE vehicle.

I've had Enhanced Autopilot on my Model 3 for just over three years now. For the package as a whole, I find it worthwhile for the features it provides. I routinely use autolane change (so you don't have to keep turning Autopilot back on again after changing lanes), Summon (both basic and smart versions of it), Autopark for parallel parking and "walk away park". The latter is more useful to me than Autopark as there are a few parks at work that have a bush, wall or work truck next to them that most people skip because it's almost impossible to get out of the car. With this feature, I can line up the car in front of the park and double tap the Park gear button on the stalk - when I then get out of the car and close the door it will then put itself in the park and I don't have to worry about trying to squeeze my way out. I can then use summon to pull it out of the park when I need to get back in.
