We were just driving it one pedal style, had a couple of fast accelerations (on to the motorway) but not crazy....it wasn't a headache as such, more like dizziness, unbalanced...

We are going to see if we can grab another longer drive to see if it persists and maybe look at changing the one pedal driving as mentioned above too.

Thanks for the thoughts/ideas!

When I started driving Teslas I found it hard to be careful enough with acceleration etc. It is something you will get used to over time.

Someone suggested turning off one pedal driving, another way to make it more smooth (at least to begin with) is to set the car in Chill Mode so that it won't accelerate so much. Not that the Model Y RWD have a very harsh acceleration, but it will help, especially to begin with.

The Teslas are a lot quicker to respond than any ICE car and that might make for a less even drive when you are getting used to it. Something that would affect anyone that is susceptible to motion sickness.

Making sure you don't accelerate hard will probably be the best thing you can do to make your wife more comfortable when you are out driving.

Maybe do another test drive with one pedal driving turned off and acceleration set to chill, and try your best to drive carefully - and see how it goes?

We test drove an MG4, and with One-Pedal turned on, my wife said it was making her queasy. Just a lot more aggressive slowing rather than coasting I guess.

She also complains of car-sickness on a stop-start motorway in an ICE.

It's also partly a matter of learning to lift the foot off the accelerator in a much more nuanced manner than is needed for an ICE, and each car requires a different level of control. The MG4 is definitely more aggressive in its initial deceleration than the Model Y, something I noted just this weekend after a few days of driving my Y and then switching to my wife's MG4 - the first couple of times I had to apologise to passengers for initially strong braking! I think Tesla's OPD is consistent in application and much easier to control than the MG; that said, agree with the idea of the OP trying it without it enabled, as it's one factor that could certainly lead to a less smooth ride.

Probably a good idea to let her drive (if she hasnt already had a go).

Maybe you weren't as smooth as you thought. Sitting in the passenger seat with another newer MY driver might be a useful experience?

Setting Acceleration to Chill mode might be a good idea if stomping on the go pedal seems a bit dramatic - it just takes the edge off.

Also - you can't turn one-pedal driving off - nor alter the level of regen.

You can only set what happens when the car has slowed right down.

It will either:

HOLD - Coast to a very smooth stop and go into hold (wont roll forward or back) - the default behaviour I think and you will seldom have to use the brake pedal.

ROLL - slow right down and behave as if its in Neutral - ie roll backwards or forward depending on the slope of the surface - you will have to use the brake pedal.

CREEP - Like a conventional ICE auto - will keep creeping forward - you will have to use the brake pedal.

Personally - it seemed to take no time to get used to (I use HOLD) - and seems like the smoothest car I have ever driven. Coming to a stop feels almost unnoticeable (maybe you wife gets an odd feeling of not sensing the stop?).

The comment above "It's also partly a matter of learning to lift the foot off the accelerator in a much more nuanced manner than is needed for an ICE" is the most accurate statement that you will hear.

Thanks everyone for your thoughts/input/etc. We were for another drive yesterday and everything came up well - no issues. So we are pushing ahead and look like we will be ordering one (not waiting for the minor refresh, rather getting the order in now to take advantage of the clean car rebate).

On the list of things to do/prepare for:

  1. Get a home charger installed - looking at Evnex as I like the feature set incl PV aware to maximise the generation from that.
  2. Get some accessories from tessories - sill protectors, rain gutter filter (hmm where do you stop haha)
  3. USB drive - I believe the car comes with some (small??) storage, but any recommendations/thoughts on this?
  4. Towbar - not for towing, just for the bike rack πŸ˜€

Things we are going to wait and see for:

  1. Tinted windows/roof
  2. Mats - no harm in waiting to see how annoying the factory ones are 🀣

Thanks again everyone - much appreciated!

@E3xtc Tesla's website states estimate delivery is between October to December 2023. It is more than likely that you will receive the car before 31st December 2023 to be able to submit your subsidy claim but I would recommend you budget accordingly that there may be a chance you may not get the $7k odd subsidy returned if your car does not turn up before 31st December 2023 as worst-case scenario. Evnex EVSE is great from both support and build quality. My work colleague with M3 uses Samsung T5 portable SSD for sentry and dash cam recordings.

Do whatever you want to do man.

Yep, comes with a small Tesla-branded USB stick. It works fine but, I understand over time is more prone to corruption. Mine is still working ok but showing some signs of going dodgy. The most commonly recommended drive is, IIRC, the Samsung T7. Another option is running TeslaUSB on a RPi; this automatically uploads content to a NAS or other storage device when connected to the home wifi network. I have it set up but do find it sometimes can take a while to start up. See https://github.com/marcone/teslausb.

As for mats: honestly, this would be my number one recommendation of all the possible accessories for the MY (and I have bought a lot!). Other accessories are nice-to-haves, whereas the mats are a game changer, as I and others have reported on in the past few pages. Personally, I’d go with the full set; if you have kids in the back I’d recommend the inserts that cover the carpet to the sides of the seats - not sure how the brats get that bit dirty, but no issues with those inserts in place.

Don't forget to use a referral link when you order so you get $800 off the price and 3 months of Enhanced Autopilot!

  1. If you want to automate solar charging then the Evnex options are good...but they are pricey. If you're out of the house all day when solar generation is happening you might be better off with just the standard wall charger
  2. I wouldn't go too nuts with accessory buying until you have the car and see what you truly need
  3. Yes, it comes with one, but it's just a thumb drive. Depending how much you drive, expect it to wear out after around a year and then replace it with a SSD (or if you're into it, use a Raspberry Pi to automate uploading of footage and to have many days of non-stop dashcam footage)
  4. Tesla has an OEM option, but there are third party options that are just as good and cheaper - you do miss out on "trailer mode" in the car without the OEM option but it's not a big deal.

Personally I think the 3D mats from Tessories have been the best purchase I have done for extras on the car, but then I hate the standard mats with a passion.

As for things like tow bars, there is a Facebook group called NZ EV Owners Towbar Adventures where you can find info on towbar for your Tesla and who installs it (other than Tesla). You will find Mark Buckingham there that have probably done the most towbar installs on Teslas in NZ. He travels the country from time to time so can do it at your house.

If you go with the Tesla option, be aware that you will need to buy the ball extra.

Other good Facebook groups you might want to check out:

Tesla Owners Club New Zealand - The group is full of people with good knowledge of Teslas, and also has its own FAQ that should help you along.

Tesla Model Y NZ group - Should give you some good information about the Model Y.

And of course, if you have any questions feel free to ask them here.

Maybe the first item should be to get a Tesla Mobile Connector

They aren't included with the car.

You may find yourself somewhere where you have to use a 3 pin wall plug somewhere when travelling - The Tesla one has some advantage over some of the slightly cheaper ones on the market too.

The car can pick up a software update and push it out to the Tesla Mobile Charger. In fact it's worth noting that Tesla pushed out an update to the charger recently, so they went from charging at 8A maximum to 10A. That means the charger will add 15km per hour of charging from a regular 10A wall outlet. The cheaper ones I have seen only ever charge at 8A (12km/h).

Plus with the alternative tail supplied with the Tesla UMC, one can charge at 15A - and this may require nothing more than replacing one of your standard power points with a 15A one; and for an additional $80, one can purchase the caravan tail to charge at up to 16A using a caravan socket.

Of course, many will argue that a dedicated wall charger is a necessary purchase - and while it's preferable, it may well not be viable. We have no intention to fit one as it's going to cost well over $3k, and get by absolutely fine charging two EVs on 10A and 16A portable EVSEs.

Over the weekend, I made a regrettable mistake and accidentally scratched the left front bumper of my car while backing out of the driveway. What frustrated me the most was that I didn't receive any proximity warning from the car, but I understand that the responsibility lies with me, and I should have been more cautious.

It's disheartening to witness this mishap, especially since this is our very first brand new car, and we only purchased it in April this year. I'm honestly more upset about it than I probably should be, as I've always considered myself a good driver and hold myself to a high standard when it comes to avoiding such errors.

I'm wondering what my options are at this point and what others have done in similar situations. Given that the car has also accumulated a few road chips on the bonnet and front bumper, I'm considering whether it's worth getting the bonnet and bumper repainted. Do any of you have recommendations for a trusted panel beater who specializes in working on Tesla vehicles?

I appreciate you taking the time to listen and read my story. I needed to share it and hear others' opinions and advice. Thank you.

Edit: Apologies for not including my location, I reside in Auckland.

As Cat Stevens once sang: "The first cut is the deepest"...

You don't need a "specialist" panel beater. Just Google reviews for one handy to where you live.

A full bumper respray is going to cost $$$. You may want to claim on insurance.
