FYI It appears Telsa have released a LR (600kms WLTP) RWD MY in Germany

The RWD LR seems like an interesting car. But I am pretty sure it is not a LFP battery in it, and that it is being built in the Berlin factory - so might not show up as model choice anywhere else anytime soon.

If it was available and I was buying a Model Y, I think I would still choose the RWD LFP battery model over the RWD LR model.

Tesla don't use LFP batteries for any of their long-range cars because the energy density just isn't high enough. Things may change in the future though with LFMP chemistries.

I know I often write when there is something wrong with the Model Y, so let me try to write when I am happy.

First of all I am happy for the update that gave us adaptive high beams. I think the lights on the Tesla were pretty good already, and I am very happy with the update.

Also happy that the Model Y now talks to my phone app again. Sucks when things don't work.

Other nice updates we have gotten lately that has added to the car:

  • Speed cameras are now shown in the map (with Premium connectivity)
  • Navigate to charger now includes third party chargers and pre-conditioning of the battery

It is not all shiny-happy-Tesla though.

First and foremost I wish that the lane departure warnings actually allowed you to be next to the left line and not shout at me so much. Seems to want me to always be in the centre of the lane, even though Autosteer dosen't even manage that itself. There was a time that it was working the way I would like, but most of the time it has been way too nervous.

Yeah an update or two ago the lane departure was definitely more relaxed. Now with a recent update it's back to being very nervous and noisy which doesn't really suit NZ's style of roads on state highways. I've resorted to turning it off on long drives since I tend to hug the left rather than being forced to sit nearer to the middle.

I’m more pissed off they’ve still not fixed the slow-down-for-no-justifiable-reason fault with TACC; it’s been there since later last year IIRC, in which time there have been about 4-5 updates. Or at least provide us with the option of a ‘dumb’ adaptive cruise control…

So I watched a new review of the S3XY knob (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-9mG1050DqE&t=2s), and have to say I'm pretty tempted... Finally a product that adds a large number of shortcuts, allows a bespoke set-up, and provides visual queues as to what each button press will do. (I hadn't realised they'd tapped into a bunch of other controls otherwise restricted by Tesla; I knew about the battery preconditioning ability, but not the regen control.)

The biggest downside is the substantial price - $330 US and that's before shipping. Best discount code I could find was $10 US...

@jarledb - I recall you've bought one of these; did you manage to get it at a lower price? If you've received it, how have you found it, and would you say it was worth the outlay? Has anyone else bought one?

I'm not interested in the same company's buttons - as well as being ugly, their lack of any direct ability to directly indicate what they'll do when pressed. It'll be interesting to see how long it takes another company to reverse engineer the knob and produce it at a more competitive price, but given this actually does more than just display info (ie, it provides another means of control) I'm not sure how much I'd put my trust in one...

I have to admit I am not really using the S3XY Knob all that much. But I am using a couple of the features that comes with the commander (the unit that connects to your car).

The Commander is handling turning on Autosteer again after making a lane change (given you use your indicator), and it is also making sure that the cars rear lights are on during the day.

Features of the knob I might be using are:

  • Pre-conditioning the battery before charging. Really not needed anymore as Tesla have added third party chargers to the map

  • Setting window wiper speed

  • Media controls (at the moment it can only adjust the volume, but previous/next/pause/play etc. are coming).

  • Quick way to flash the hazard lights to thank someone.

Features of the Commander I won't be using:

  • Turning off all the traction controls etc. to hoon around

  • Kickdown (goes from Chlll mode to Sport/Normal if you press down the accelerator all the way)

As for the price, think I paid $199 USD for it, including shipping. But I got in on the pre-sale and paid for mine in August last year.

A little tip if you want to save money: You can control everything you would be able to control via the buttons or knob via the app, so if you are happy with controlling it from your smartphone, you could just buy the commander.

There’s currently 20% off products at the moment, and so with an additional (but tiny) new customer discount I’ve ended up ordering the S3xy knob (that just sounds sooooo wrong) for NZ $436. Kinda wished I’d ordered it on release, but still better than paying full price…

Installed update 2024.14.3 overnight. Quite a big update to the UI. Commented in the Model 3 forum.

This type of pay-for-more-features for a car really peeves me off.

Just sell the car for the full price. Imagine if we had to pay a sum everytime we opened the boot.

This applies to all car manufacturers, not just Teslas.

I’ve got to agree. Where FSD is a little different because it has ongoing development costs*, the concept of “hardware unlocking” (as borrowed from the computer industry) is an anathema to most vehicle owners. Tesla already does it with the power boost option on the LR.

*Regardless, way too expensive for a software upgrade.

This is a US specific configuration, not the Model Y that is sold here in NZ. This spec being referred to was a RWD variant that had the pack from Long Range version but locked down to match the range of a RWD. It was sold so to meet the price requirements of the EV incentives being offered in the US.

For current MY owners.

When the Tesla Model Y was first released in NZ (Sept 2022?) an official Tesla towbar was “coming soon” i.e. Q1 2023. My question is, did it ever eventuate? I’m assuming the software has a “Trailer Mode”, which my 2022 Model 3 doesn’t have (not certified to tow - in NZ).

A couple of the things that irk me about my M3 is the boot vs hatch and not (officially) being able to tow. I’ve been thinking lately, I can probably be able to put up with the slightly reduced range and uglier looks to gain those. Not keen on the facelift changes in the M3 so the same applies to the MY.
I want to stick with LFP for the battery chemistry, so the other option is to wait for the Sealion 7 to arrive next year.

It is on the NZ website but "out of stock" MY Tow Package

Plenty of great deals on MY these days. Can only imagine how the pricing will go once the Juniper update comes out and they start clearing '24 stock.

$2250 and doesn’t include the tongue (just the 2” receiver). I guess that’s the price of going to an OEM. Tessories NZ has similar (removable but including the tongue) for $1200 fitted, but that doesn’t include “Tow Mode Software” like the Tesla offering. I assume Tesla NZ are referring to “Trailer Mode” because as far as I can tell “Tow Mode” is to allow your Tesla to be towed short distances without wrecking the drivetrain.

Can anyone confirm that a MY has “Trailer Mode” whether you have the installation at all?

The “great deals” also means my M3 has a low trade in value and, as evidenced by the number of “private seller” listings on TM, won’t be easy to shift privately.

Many of us MY owners with towbars fitted have used Mark Buckingham, who conveniently travels the country to install them (towing his towbars on a trailer towed by an MY!). As it's not OEM it means we don't get the trailer mode but I've not struck any issues with that (including no problems with the rear parking sensors - which in my last car would be set off by the proximity of the trailer!). So if you do get a Y, unless you do go with the OEM towbar you'll strike the same thing. (Though, I assume, the MY doesn't have that same issue of not being certified for towing in NZ, given it is theoretically available?)

Personally, I'm not willing to pay the stupid prices for the OEM bar (even if it were available), nor put up with the hassle of the installation, as I doubt they'd use the mobile guys to do it (so this would mean a four hour return trip to get it done). I don't use the towbar a heap, but it works perfectly when I do need it. Mark's install is clean - it has a removable hitch, with the socket sitting behind the removable panel, so unless I'm towing it doesn't even show (though I've lost a couple of the plastic covers - cheap to replace, luckily, and this time I've not removed any of the tabs that otherwise make it easier to remove).

Edit: the post directly above references the towbar option from Tessories; I understand that's just another way of purchasing a Mark Buckingham install.
