My Prius Alpha came without a spare tyre, just a reinflation kit -- presumably not much use if you have torn a tyre.  So I bought a full-size spare wheel and tyre (an import from Japan), and the tyre fitted is a Dunlop Dig-tyre Studless DSX (a snow tyre, I believe).

Question is -- would this tyre be OK to use as a spare under the usual NZ conditions, or should I replace it with a conventional tyre?

Thanks for your help

I would err on the side of safety and put a NZ tyre on it. Snow tyres are for just that snow conditions and have been linked as accident causes.

Short answer is NO, it is not acceptable, in fact it was made illegal 10 years ago

https://www.nzta.govt.nz/media-releases/new-rules-for-winter-tyres-from-1-april/

Having a single snow tyre (or even two)  (even temporarily ) can make hard breaking dangerous

Get a regular summer tread tyre

Thank you both.  I'll get a summer tyre put on.

Anyone want to buy a single snow tyre…?
