kiwiharry:

After 4 weeks parts hadn't arrived and after thinking about things over those weeks I finally decided to formally reject the car based on the on-going issues and I didn't feel replacing the same brand new part again would really solve the issue.

I have had several items that went faulty and when the faulty part was replaced it went faulty again. The problem being that the spare parts are usually from the same early production as the original faulty part. Later production may have a fix but it is not always guaranteed that the fix makes it into the spares chain.

The make of the car is Kia.

I estimate that in time and parts they probably spent approx 15-20% of the value of the car on the various repairs and diagnosis attempts. I saw the warranty invoice for the repair last year and it indicated 18 hours of labour for that 1 diagnosis/repair.

Don't worry about that amount of time spent, the dealership owner and staff will still afford to eat tonight.

That's all part of the swings and roundabouts of retail. Most cars will be sold and never return for much more than minor trouble.

I'm glad you got a good outcome and didn't have to thump the table to get satisfaction - that reflects well on the dealership and brand.

Pretty good service in my opinion.

As to the original fault, I wrote a guide about fixing a similar fault for indicators for Holden Commodores. From the description, it is possible that it was a similar issue.

Basically the contacts in the relay would stick and not release when power to the coil was removed. Fix in that case was to simply replace the relay. I wonder if this was the same cause with a failing relay in the BCM and the door switches were a red hearing (or an additional fault).

I would be interested to know if the car you rejected ends up on their sale yard.

I have a Kia (Sportage) and have found the dealer really good to deal with.

I haven't had an issue like yours, but di get an issue where the suspension started an annoying squeak.

They sorted it, but reckoned it was from a stone getting into the top of the damper form taking the vehicle off road. I'd never taken it 'off-road' but had driven it on a few dirt roads. They wanted me to pay for the repair (it took them a whole day and a half to isolate it and remove the rear suspension). I said if the AWD vehicle can't be driven on a dirt road, I didn't want it. Didn't have to pay.

If I recall correctly the BCM was the first thing they replaced back in July 2019, then some other module a couple of months later when the fault re-occurred
