The Clean Car Package may turn out to be the best thing New Zealand should have done but justifying it on the basis that this is what everyone else has done doesn't stack up unless you also compare countries that are very similar to New Zealand.  Population density, population affluence, infrastructure, geography, public transport etc. All of these things affect where we drive, how far we drive, what style/size of vehicle we drive etc.

New Zealand isn't that unique.

Okay. We are at the bottom of the world at the end of long supply chains. Our main resources are agricultural/fisheries. Those that aren’t, are deemed off-limits.

Our energy system is based on mostly renewable electricity generated at the opposite end of the our long narrow country from our demand. Other energy is mostly overseas sourced hydrocarbons. Our infrastructure is poor by developed standards, due in part to our relatively low population density and low tax base. Communities have developed around car use and public transport just doesn’t work effectively. Mass rapid transit is a joke.

On the world stage we don’t matter. If the alpine fault let rip tomorrow and pulled the entire country below sea level it would be like taking your finger out of a bucket of water (except for the tsunami threat caused by the earthquake of course).

And? This has little bearing on an EV subsidy being successful. Most people are not farmers. Most people live in an "urban" environment.

These are all reasons we should be promoting the switch to EVs. If you're referring to our power infrastructure, I'd counter argue that it's not poor compared to other developed nations.

Not sure how that's relevant. I never mentioned NZ influencing the rest of the world - as I said, we're late to the party.

I think we are somewhat beyond arguing over who should do more or go first on an international level.

With regards to the ‘complaint’ that government ignored Treasury advice – it’s worth pointing out that Treasury is just one analyst opinion out of many the government might ask for advice, and government are under no obligation to follow Treasury’s advice. It’s also worth remembering that Treasury are actually not particularly good at their job. You need only look at how far wrong they got things like unemployment and the their deficit forecast (40% out, just 6 weeks after the budget). Additionally, Treasury are upfront with the caveat that in many cases their analysis is surface-deep at best as they don’t have the time or resource or knowledge to do full analysis.

The feebate scheme is clearly working, given the uptick in EV sales and long may it continue to work. Like it or not, EVs are a big part of our transport future and we should not let perfect be the enemy of good in this area.

I can’t wait to upgrade my (new, petrol, but efficient and cleaner than most) car to an EV – once I have reliable access to home charging which I can’t do at  my current apartment unfortunately.

Being devil's advocate it could also be said, "The feebate scheme is clearly not working, given the uptick in Ute sales." 😎

You mean the sales of Utes where the fees haven't kicked in yet? I wonder why that is happening....

just seen even USA are about to have emission targets - apparently 50% EVs (not sure which type) by 2030. non hybrids already completely banned in UK 2030 and hybrids banned in 2035.

It impossible to know if its working here. Ute sales skyrocketed for obvious reasons. When the feebate came out does that mean many bought one then? From what I see many who already ordered and had no need for a carrot, got cash. You would need to wait a year to see how it panned out. When monthly imports are 5% EV then quickly 15%, then 30% etc.

As you probably guessed my comment about the utes was largely tongue in check to show it is silly to focus on one metric.

To claim so early on in the feebate scheme that it is clearly working by the recent sales alone is jumping the gun a bit. There's no doubt people were holding off until the scheme was introduced. The publicity around the feebate scheme will have driven interest in EV's. The timing of arrival of EV stocks into the country also influences EV sales patterns. There's a lot of variables which only time will allow the true picture to emerge.

It has taken me a while to realise that if you want to use irony, sarcasm or levity, then you need to annotate a post as such. People who are passionate about a subject will tend to react in a focussed manner rather than a shrug of the shoulders.

So true, hence why I used the 😎 emoji in that post. Obviously I was far too subtle.

Looks like the "temporary" rebate period has been extended until March 31 2022 due to Delta.
