The manual entry for the frunk in a model S was always a PITA....

For a Model 3 if the 12V battery dies, you can jumper it to an external one via leads behind the Towing eye, then you can electronically pop the frunk to change out/charge the 12V battery

In the US, trunk = Boot, so shouldnt we be calling the front bit a Froot :)

They have approved repair shops and a mobile tech.

To be fair its not ideal but its not like its an unknown when you buy the vehicle.

They are opening more service centers, I expect one in Duners or QT one day.

Nice example of having a lot of money and lacking a little common sense....

She bought the car essentially from an Auckland located dealer and didn't think about this.

To be honest I didn't realise til recently that there was a service dealer in chch...

Only cost me 500 to ship my leaf from chch to dunedin...

To be fair the lack of a established widespread sales & service network has been a a concern of Tesla buyers outside of major centers globally.

Tesla has mitigated this somewhat via it's mobile service option.

But note the wording "If your service needs can be met by a Mobile Service Technician". Obviously leaves the owner in a tough spot if the car requires attention in a workshop, especially if the car is not in a state to be driven long distance.

I am somewhat amused that they offering mobile service coverage for such a broad area, and expected there would be at least some geographic constraints, such as excluding great barrier island, Chatham island etc...

Tesla has recently committed (as in, this week) to sending a service tech to the lower South Island (I assume Dunedin) once a month for a week at a time to take care of outstanding service requests. I assume if they're doing that then it won't be long before they open an actual service centre down there.

If we use New pure electric Light EV owner towns as a proxy for Tesla sales, it is fairly evenly split between queens-town area and Dunedin area, so A tour of both locations is likely for a mobile tech. Would be hard where to pick where to put the service center if they do stand one up:

Queenstown (53) / Wanaka (39) / Arrowtown (9) / Cromwell (6) / Alexandrara (4)

Dunedin (78) / Mosgil (10) / Omaru (10)

Invercagaill has 18, but is similar driving time from each.

Was that a while ago? Christchurch has had a full on service centre for around a year now, so I'd expect anything from the South Island that requires going to a service centre is being sent to Christchurch.

umm within the year. i don't know him personally, it was a conversation with someone selling his car. as soon as he mentioned that it really did put me off lol.

Put your money where your mouth is or buy something else - pretty simple really.

I am a critic and have been critical of Tesla in the past (I’m a V8 Holden guy), Will be picking up model 3 shortly and giving it a go to see for myself. I’m sure it won’t be perfect but I’ll be able to judge fairly. If I don’t like it, I’ll buy something else. Plenty of choice. From what I’ve read and seen they’ve come a long way and I’m going to give them a chance like I would any manufacturer.

I suggest buying one and sharing your experiences or if they are not for you buy an MG, Leaf or Etron.

If I'm pricing this up, would I need to add a few thousand dollars to add a faster charger to the home? How much would that cost and do I have to have one?
