After seeing some discussions elsewhere online, are there any people here who are considering a Tesla for whom Musks recent behaviour has changed their view on buying one, or any here that own one who are intending (or would like to even if they can't justify the cost) on switching brands as a consequence?

I’m very unlikely to purchase a Tesla when it comes time to replacing our Model Y. And, yep, that’s mostly driven by my thoughts on Musk. Given there are many things I like the look of with the new Y, and generally love owning and driving a Tesla, that could be frustrating. (Queue critiques of ‘wokester showboating’…!)

I'm thinking of buying an extra vehicle. I'm looking at a Tesla. Elon is fine.

This reminds me of my Uncle, a World War 2 veteran, who swore black and blue that he would never buy a Japanese or German car. His reasons are perhaps slightly more valid than the ‘group think’ going on today.

However, would I buy another Tesla? Probably not.
But nothing to do with the politics of its CEO.
It is more because there are far more options than there were in 2021-2022 when I ordered my Model 3. At that stage there was really only the Polestar 2 (and even it wasn’t physically in the country when I ordered).

What Tesla does well is really energy efficient vehicles and great software. But the build quality isn’t great, which has become evident over time.

I still dislike having no driving display in front of me and the lack of some physical buttons/levers. I have gone some way to improving that situation with aftermarket accessories. All of which are just a Tesla software update away from being rendered useless.

So it is Musk’s relentless push to simplify and reduce manufacturing costs by removing stuff like USS and cruise radar (and stalks). Moving evermore towards the utopia of autonomous driving. And it is an arrogance when it comes what his customers want, in a “Apple knows best” kind of way. That is what disappoints me about him. I couldn’t care less about his politics.

FYI even if you have booked a time don't expect them to look at your car in that allotted time. Mine was booked for 10:30 but it wasn't looked at until 3PM.

Thats handy to know! Hopefully they may have a loaner for me to do some errands over that side of town.

How about setting up new discussion ( I think there already is one somewhere).

This thread has been really useful for the tech details and M3 info and it would be great if it was kept free of the anti-Muskiteer politics.

The comments about build quality issues seem to flow from the USA bult models - they seem very slapdash.

The Chinese and German built units seem to be very good quality. The Chinese ones are so good that at one stage they flew a group ofthe Chinese build team over to the States to try and work out how the Americans ones were so bad!

The NZ and Australian cars all come out of China.

Would I buy another Tesla? I dont intend selling my car for a while, but I would now feel unconfortable 'supporting Elon Musk'.

Though to keep that in perpective, he is one of 120,000 people in Tesla and has a 13% stake in the company.

He is the CEO and the 2/3 Majority voting rules in place for the company give him an oversized vote,

Also the "billion dollar bonus"  scheme currently in courts would deliver him another 12% of the stock, meaning that to vote against him on a major matter would need 88% of the remaining 75%  of stock holders, .. a pretty big ask...

Its his dog and pony show until he wants to move on....

While the build quality out of China may be better, the cars are still built to a price. They are lightweight and lacking some sound insulation that other EVs get. The paint quality on my car is disappointing, especially considering I paid an extra $3300. The bonnet is so lightweight and flimsy, there are special instructions on how to close it so you don’t dent it.

The lightness is how I manage to get 13kWh/100km. The best I can probably hope to get from another manufacturer is 15 and more likely 17kWh/100km. Their vehicles are normally hundreds of kgs heavier.

There's a bonnet?

Actually apart from the day we got the car, it's never been opened since.

You have to refill the washer fluid in there. I have opened mine 2-3 times to do that.

Yeah my wife also put me straight on that. She has been doing that as it's her car.

The frunk on our MY is so often the difference between fitting our holiday gear in the car vs needing to have a roof box like on our last car, so YMMV massively on this.

And then there’s the even more critical role of getting takeaways home without steaming up/smelling out the car!
