@jonathan18 I've tried a few apps now and seriously just go with Tessie. You can also use my referral code for it for a free month: https://tessie.app.link/ZGCnIpLAgrb

The reason why I am saying "go with Tessie" is because of how responsive the developer is. I was running a local Teslamate instance and while it is OK (it is free) I was never fully happy with it. On the off-chance I asked the Tessie developer to make a data importer from Teslamate and he did so in just a few days and bugs I noticed were fixed almost instantly. It's just run by a geek who clearly takes pride in his work and for that reason it is well worth the yearly cost.

I personally run an iPhone but it looks like Tessie has a rather solid Android app too. In Tessie you can also set up voice assistants but as you likely know the Tesla has a very open API so if you're running Home Assistant you can also set up additional automations.

For your basic controls the official Tesla app is OK and has widgets and may suffice. Tessie logs all sorts of stats (driving stats, energy consumption, charging etc) and is very good at notifications too. Regardless you're always going to have the official app (for the car key) and for most people this works fine for the basics.

Thanks for the reply, Michael, and the code - a month of use will give me more than enough time to determine whether its benefits warrant spending $10 a month, as at this point if I had to choose only this or online connectivity I think the latter would win (and I know which the rest of the family will be interested in!). I’ll also give Bestla a go, as while far less feature rich, it also doesn’t seem to have the same ongoing cost.

Sadly not running Home Assistant, but rather limited to GA via phones and GH devices; looks like I’ll be able to do some things via GA/GH, which would be the ideal. Pre warming the car via voice command rates right up there, as I don’t depart for work at the same time every day and WFH part of the week…

I just have the Tesla App on my Android phone (ZFold3) at the moment. But I did add an app called “Watt Time” to my Galaxy Watch 4. It allows me to do all the basic remote control functions like lock/unlock, preheat cabin, ventilate, start/stop charging, open/close & unlock charge port, flash lights, honk horn, open frunk, open/close boot, toggle sentry mode and a bunch more. It also provides vehicle location and status.

This app originally had another name but the developer had to change it for copyright reasons. There was another I looked at but it was a subscription service and being the cheap sod I am, I bought “Watt Time“ ($10 from memory) rather than soak a monthly fee.

I do like the Tesla charger because of the button on it that operates the charge port, but have been using my watch recently while I decide what EVSE to get installed in the garage. On the odd occasion it takes a while to connect (10-15 seconds) but mostly is almost instant. It is good at a public charger to be able to unlock the charge port without having to go into the car or pull my phone out.

Thanks for the info; Watt Time won't be compatible with my watch as it runs Tizen rather than Wear OS (and no chance I move on from the original Galaxy Watch as I like a three day battery life!), but I have seen there's a compatible app for my watch called DRIVE Electric for Tesla ($15 in this case), which seems to offer a decent range of controls and visibility of settings; looks pretty fugly but as long as it does the job.

(I noticed that the same person who makes Watt Time also makes another app for Wear OS that allows the watch to act as a Tesla key; an advantage, I guess if you want to go somewhere without your phone. No other options for Tizen!)

Noting you have an Android, have you tried setting your phone up to use GA for controlling anything on your car via voice commands?

No. Google intrudes enough on my life at the moment without linking my car to it as well! But I guess now GA also works on my watch it could be something to look at. You know, because of all the effort involved in pulling your phone out of your pocket 😁

I have the Tasker plug-in for Tesla as well, but haven’t bothered with any automations through that either. I toyed with the possibility of having it respond to some commands with “KITT” as the trigger word but haven’t put the effort into programming it.

Thanks Michael. You are certainly correct about the support from the developer, I forgot to use your referral and asked if he could apply retrospectively, which was no problem and is done.

What sold it for me is the ability in the next release to set start an stop times for charging. I have Contact Goodnights plan  which means 3 hours of free power from 9pm till 12am, I can usually charge back to 100% in the 3 hours  or so (3 phase power, Gen 3 charger, at 11kW) but not always. Being able to start and stop inside the window means its just set and forget.

We don't use the car every day so can just leave it plugged in in the garage without having to manage charge percentage.

So far we have done almost 13,000km and haven't paid a cent to run it.

michaelmurfy: @Obraik No issues. It was just something I had to give resources to run, keep backed up etc. Also it didn’t really understand charging costs. Tessie is just way more elegant.

Also Teslamate isn’t something I’d expose to the internet so had to VPN to home to access it and it wasn’t particularly mobile friendly.

Those are fair reasons. I've been running TeslaMate basically since I got the car at the end of 2019 but it's only just got its first update for the year.

I do run it externally but I have it behind an AzureAD reverse proxy and authentication (and just to the Grafana stats)

Are there any Model 3 owners (or prospective owners) who’re keen on a discounted rear seat storage container?

I accidentally purchased one for an M3 rather than MY. Bought off Ali Express for about $35, but very much open to offers well below this - rather it got used than it sit in a cupboard.

It’s like the M3 version in this listing: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005003657809812.html

PM me if interested. Happy to post, or for pick-up in PN. Ta.

Never mind 2022.20.X, I’m still waiting for 2022.16.2

I actually just got 2022.16.3 today.

Ironically while it was installing I watch a CFTesla video on the newly released 2022.20.6 software. (USA owner)
As well as the seatbelt pretension Obraik mentioned, it adds “Chime on Green traffic light” for non FSD vehicles.
Way back before I ordered my M3 this was a feature I liked but was disappointed it was an FSD-only function. But now it’s for everybody. Yay!

I got 2022.20.6 today.

I have Enhanced Autopilot so the chime on green basically completes it for me. Am doing a large roadtrip currently so the update was a welcome one before the trip!

It’s released by VIN isn’t it? In which case I would have thought you would get it before MM.

Maybe purchasing Enhanced Autopilot gets you ‘privileges’.😉 But then you have that also…..

I have tried both ‘Standard’ and ‘Advanced’ settings for updates, doesn’t seem to make any difference.

Sometimes my car is one of the first in the country to get it, other times it's right at the end. The last couple it's been towards the end. The only pattern is that the more I'm interested in an update the longer it takes to arrive.

Haha, yep

When there is an update I want, you can bet the first thing I do when I pull into my driveway after work is not get out and go inside, its check for an update.

If it sits there for too long, then I know its coming.

Heads-up displays: I’ve just come across a new style of HUD-type device on Ali Express for MYs/M3s - this one fits in the vent slot as opposed to sitting on the dash:

I like the way this integrates more into the car than the one I’ve ordered (which sits on the dash and uses a reflective screen) and I’m happy with the more limited amount of info it shows (I really just want the speedo), but I have two concerns:
1. Whether it’ll be visible without too much effort (so whether the digits are large enough [about 1.5cm high by the look of it], and and whether it’s high enough in the field of view).
2. Whether it’ll block the air vents (or would require the driver’s vents to always be directed as a V shape).

Keen on the thoughts of current M3 drivers, given they’ll have a good idea of the answers to the above.

Thanks for any thoughts…

It looks like it will achieve the main purpose of getting a speed readout in front of you and I don’t believe it will be any less usable than a conventional speedo for that.

I think the ventilation is one of the weakest points of my M3 and because I like airflow in my face, blocking the vent directly in front of me would be ‘suboptimal’.
