Volvo XC40 PHEV, sub-80K...
JessieB:
The rebate is not the big issue here. By far the biggest issue is that a new ICE vehicle will depreciate very quickly.
But if the ICE is $40k less expensive than an equivalent EV, like at present, that's a significant upfront saving to offset subsequent depreciation.
And depreciation rates for EVs can be pretty horrific, just look at the NZ-new Nissan Leafs with regard to resale value and battery replacements costs. I have read some pretty scary ownership stories for these.
And it will be interesting to see how Tesla's fare over time with depreciation. The Model 3 is a relatively new release, but what will a 2017 Tesla, say initial purchase price $90k, resale be in 2027 with 10 years wear on its batteries?
I think it is still too early to compare long term ownership costs for EV vs ICE.

Woot, now that's a rebate I can get behind.... -$40k off. You ev owners can keep your $5 - $8k.
