On a different note (to potholes), the RCG cell tower at Paekakariki Hill went live a few weeks ago. Interestingly it only seems to be live for Vodafone users at this point, and the coverage is actually more oriented towards Paekakariki Hill Road (and houses along the road) than Transmission Gully. I had assumed (incorrectly) that a tower going in near TG would be for TG.

The telcos haven't heard of this small project yet, so they have had no time to plan...

DjShadow:

I think the weather has taken its toll on all of SH1...

I feel there may be something missing from our road planning if a spell of bad weather causes the surface to fall to bits.

You mean everyone in charge of the money works out of Auckland so it doesn't matter to them.

I got to drive Southbound on the new TG road recently.  A pleasure to drive, despite the rain, wind  and dark.  The little corolla I hired really did work hard to maintain 100 going uphill.  I thought it made real difference to the drive into Wellington.

One of those "Thank God for Transmission Gully" Days, SH59 closed till further notice because of this

Yup
SH59 closed between Pukerua Bay and Fisherman's Table since Friday afternoon.
Without TG, Wellington would have been cut off for three days - and counting

What about that road through to Featherston? Isn't that open?

SH2 Remutaka Hill road wouldn't cope with the SH1 traffic and it is a huge detour if you are going just North of Pukerua Bay - a few hours at least.

SH2? Paekakariki Hill Road? Akatarawa Hill Road? All bypass the slip. While @freitasm is correct and none would have been pleasant with the extra traffic, to say Wellington would have been cut off is a bit of a stretch.

I do wonder if the timeframe is due to there being a viable alternative.

Both of those are in far worse condition, and almost invariably if the weather is bad enough to shut SH59 they are also out of action. That's without even considering the huge traffic jams that developed on Paekak Hill whenever the coastal road used to be closed.

It's moot point due to the Transmission Gully road being open, but a quick look at AA Roadwatch shows that all three alternative routes are open.

Not sure about the Akatarawa's, but Paekak Hill has definitely been closed during some of the recent bad weather. Sure it's open again now because (this time) there wasn't a massive slip on it, but pre TG I used to take that road quite a bit, and the number of times it was blocked or closed due to the weather was significant.

You might want to look closer, Paekakariki Hill road has been closed for a while. Resident access only.
