I think I'd wait and have a good look at the Corolla Cross AWD Hybrid if I was buying new in that sector.  Mazda's Mild (Claytons) hybrid doesn't help much with economy and it's an expensive car, especially if you need to pay a clean car tax after 1 Jul (not sure if this is the case).  Or maybe a 1-2 year old Rav4 AWD hybrid

The Seltos EX looks badly underspecified to me. It has halogen headlights and manual windscreen wipers! 🤢

As for Toyotas, I find them depressing. They have lots of cheap looking plastic in the interior and the ergonomics don't feel right.

Our second car is the Kia Seltos EX 2020-year model when it was first launched around the world. We paid $32800 incl ORC and I see now it is $40k for EX but they did add ventilated seats. The seltos is an awesome car for what you pay. The halogen lights is prob it's only downside as rear lights are all LED but it's not a deal breaker for us at least. I am not fussed on automatic windscreen wipers as our 2021 CX-5 Takami had them, but it made no difference to us by it going off automatically as it's easy enough to start the wiper. The Alcántara seats are extremely comfortable, and it is roomy at the back. You could not go wrong with either Mazda or Kia. Both are reliable car manufacturers, and both provide free 3 years free servicing for most of their models. Mazda even provides 5 years free servicing on some models.

I agree on the Toyota RAV4. We test drove a 2021 RAV4 Hybrid before we bought the CX-5 Takami in 2021 and it was very roomy compared to CX-5 but very plasticky inside. It is a shame that we had to trade in the CX-5 for a European EV due to lack of space with 2 kids at back and us having to move our seats forward which is not great on longer journeys but everything else about the Takami is top notch. It feels and drives like a luxurious car.

Do whatever you want to do man.

Yeah, I quite like Kias and I don't doubt that the Seltos is a great car but I'm looking for something with premium specs. Having said that, the Niro GT-Line HEV looks like it could be a good option. It's $60k but with the low fuel consumption the TCO would be comparable to the top spec CX-30. The only downside is it's front wheel drive but that's not a deal breaker. The advantage with the Niro HEV is that I could make an easy transition to a Niro EV in a few years.

I want to narrow it down to two options so that I can put two different dealers into a competitive position. I think the CX-30 Takami and Niro GT-Line might be the best picks to go forward with. I'm not in a huge hurry so might wait a couple of months to see if the Australian mid cycle refresh of the CX-30 flows through to NZ as I'd really like wireless Carplay.
