What have I not comprehended?

That for a good many people, an E-Bike would be a suplementry form of transport (for lots of legitimate reasons), not an exclusive one, and struggle to buy and maintain a car, let alone a car *and* a multi-thousand dollar E-Bike.

Part of my issue is that people who are pro cycle (or actually any iniative) get so caught up in the supposed benefits of said initiative, they are unable to see past it, to the great many legitimate reasons that for many, that initative isn't an option Anyone not completely onboard to their way of thinking, clearly musn't be smart enough, or care enough about x y or z cause. Those people then end up being labelled as <insert iniative her> phobic.

I am not anti cycle lane, nor cyclists. I am anti replacing a productive neccessary vehicle lane, with a cycle lane, that gets next to no traffic at enormous cost. Cycle lanes are not the panacea to all traffic woes and should be appropriately placed after proper utilisation diagnostics are taken over a period of time. Submissions should be proper consultation documents, not a rubber stamping process, and every time it is, it becomes less and less likely people submit.

Like most of these emotive debates, this could be simply solved if we just accepted that there is ample room on the roads for cyclists and vehicles to co-exist as long as they are both respectful of each other. It doesn't have to be an either/or, why not both?

Throughout Aotearoa of all the cyclelanes and shared lanes have entire motor vehicle lanes been replaced?

That is true on wide roads or green fields situation.  It is not necessarily true for existing roads.  Putting a new cycle lane onto a narrowish road with reasonable volumes of traffic can introduce new congestion and/or risk.

Most highways are empty for long periods too. It's the nature of "traffic". Should we get rid of highways that get next to no traffic at enormous cost and replace them with social housing instead?

You will notice in Christchurch that you don't often see cyclists because they can get to their destination quickly, without waiting in traffic, and oftentimes separated from the roadway. Many cycleways go through local parks or adjacent to (but not on) highways.

We have a somewhat analagous situation in Blenheim.  The Taylor river trail/footpath can be used as a sort of trunk-route to get through a good chunk of the town without going on a major road. It runs from the SW of the city (where a bunch of MTB trails are), through the CBD to the NE.  Very handy.

In Wellington, yes in a few places - e.g. Cambridge Terrace.

I'd be happy to invite them over for a BBQ. (inside joke for attendees of day one of meatstock 2024) :)

We could do away with those highways, if you want to starve to death.

Good luck shopping.

Such a ridicolous attempt at equivalance.

Not ideal. were these where lane sizes were adjusted to incorporate cycle lanes? were there multiple lanes available? I am just trying to get a picture. It seem counter productive to create more congestion to accommodate cycles.
