Your 'suspicion' isn't very scientific.

It's a fair question to ask, when not one, but TWO measures to prevent incorrect fines being handed out, are missed, how do we know what is a legitimate or illegitimate fine?

I know of someone who got a speed camera fine..... thing was, their car didn't have an engine in it at the time. Was on the back of a truck, and somehow the camera picked up his car plate rather than the truck :D

Yep, this sort of thing happened to me a few years ago,

Was travelling to Greytown in my MX5, sitting almost exactly on 100.... i saw a cop car come around

the corner and again checked my speed immediately, 102, which is about 97 with the speedo error.

Then the cop turn on his lights and spins around, pulls me over and tickets me for 120!!

Nothing I could do, just had to pay it.

That truck definitely only looks about 2 hp, so yeah it should have been obvious.

why does it need to be scientific? i dont know all the factors involved, so its hard to make a scientific conclusion based on a news article. But based on my experience with the Doppler effect, errors can happen, lots of factors not going into them.

But the failing here is, it shouldn't have gone past the human check point.

I think many LTNZ sites will run a speedo test on their 'rolling road' for a few dollars .... handy to keep in car.

and for what? i doubt its calibrated, so it's worth nothing cop would probably laugh.

It also only establishes the accuracy of the speedometer, not the inaccuracy of their measurement. It's possible your car or GPS logs that data, but you're also not in a position to hand that over at the side of the road, so it can always be tampered with. Video with timestamps would probably be your best bet, since you can take measurements from landmarks.

i have tried challenging a fine for driving through an intersection with traffic lights on AMBER. i still have the ticket for bragging rights.

it was a rainy day and my 1990 car had no ABS. as I recall the lights only turned amber as i crossed the line, but without a dash camera it's difficult to say.

i explained to the cops i can't safely stop.

also appealed.

the response was i was wrong and i can either pay the fine or go to court.

it wasted so much of my time and energy that i would just pay the fine in the future, it's easier.

Would need to know the detection method of the camera. If it were radar I'd guess due to reflections, for example.

Similar thing happened to my wife.

It later came to light there was one or two highway patrol men who were really playing at being highwaymen.

They would have a previously locked on reading of a speed exceeding the limit, pull someone over and use something they had "prepared earlier" as evidence of the alleged speeding. Pr**ks

That's why it always amused me when they say "I have the reading on the unit, would you like to see it?". What would that prove? That, at some point prior to now, you've locked someone at that speed on the unit. There is nothing that ties that reading to my vehicle.

If taken to court, without other physical evidence, it's your word against theirs, and theirs is deemed infallible. 98% of the time, that's accurate, but police are human (other than the furry land sharks) also, so there's a potential small percentage that are not entirely above board.

I don't understand why the radar machine does not have a video camera on it recording them pointing it at cars etc. They have body cameras so that is not really any different.

In an era where video recording is dirt cheap and easy, why should we have to take someone's word for what they were pointing at and what the reading was along with if there were any doppler anomalies (not sure if the hand held ones make the noises or not)

Agreed. I mean it's pretty obvious the current system doesn't capture clear and obvious issues, more subtle ones is definitely going to be a problem.
