Oh, so jealous. I had my first ride round Pukekohe in a V8 Commodore recently and that was pretty fun, an F1 drive would be a totally wonderful experience. Great writeup too, thanks!

Thanks for all the responses and the kind words on the writeup and photos :-)

I remembered a couple of other things I should add...

There was one negative thing about the day that still annoys me... Drivers were given the option to pay 50 pounds for professionally done incar camera footage of their drive. I opted for this (Hell yeah!) and while it worked ok for the first few drivers, by about the 5th driver the system was dead. It was their 3rd or 4th day using this system and it wrote direct to USB memory sticks. It was unfortunately the first day they had run it in the wet and the damn USB socket faced UP in the cockpit... So there was probably some water in the socket either temproarily or permanently disabling the recording...

They happily refunded the money, but I am annoyed not to have video proof of me catching a full on accidental powerslide in an F1 car :-(

Oh well.

To anyone considering this - I strongly recommend you have a go at one of the single seater events around NZ first... The racing school at Ruapuna in Chch is excellent and you get to drive Formula Fords. There is also something in Taupo I believe. I'm sure there are others.

Cheers - N

Great write up! Really enjoyed reading about your experience. I too have done the racing school at Ruapuna and can highly recommend it. Those FF's are damn quick!

I think the closest I will ever get to driving an F1 car is when F1 2010 gets released next month!
