is there a reaspn 48-50" is too small for 4k?

There would not be a huge amount of noticeable difference between a 42" TV with 4k and a 42" TV with 1080P, unless you were very close or had great vision.

It all depends how far from the TV you sit, or how large of a TV you want.

If you have a large TV 55" plus 1080P tv, you will be able to define pixels pretty easy in a normal size room, so that's why most folks would suggest only paying a premium for 4K if you're going to be getting a big TV where you will notice the difference.

It's all up to you though.

EDIT: adding clarity

to be honest i dont know if we would see the difference as we arent that knowledgeable on AV gear.

in saying that, i just want something that looks pretty crisp as DVDs seem a bit flat compared to 1080p streamed content on the laptop (1080p screen)

Does your DVD player have an HDMI port?   You're probably noticing it flat because not only the resolution is lower, but the amount of colour that can be displayed by old cables (composite/component) is far less.  If you don't have a DVD player that connects over HDMI, try pick up one of those (usually they play both blu-ray and DVD)

yeah just bought one, the $49 sony, not the best BP in the world but good value and includes and hdmi cable.

the dvd difference was on the 1080p lappy too, still looks good but 1080p streaming looks wicked.

Yeap, that difference will be even more significant with a 4K TV, even 1080P content will look a bit low quality

but only if its a big $4k tv? we sit about 2-3m from where its intended to go. i think anything above 50" is going to be hard on the eyes.

I thought I grabbed a good deal when I picked up the 50" Sony from Jb Hifi at 692...

Just purchased Samsung F8500 from Jb HiFi as well and cannt wait to get home and set it up. I probably got the best boxing day deal.

.....

I guess will be selling the 50" Sony now...

Mentioned the WHS Moto-G $239 special to my sister as she had been looking for one, but when she went down to get it she saw it was in the Skinny section - she asked a staff member if it was locked to Skinny and they said "You'll have to assume so, because we don't know any different", and she didn't buy it.

I don't see any mention of Skinny on the WHS Moto-G phone details page, but the phone does appear if I sort by carriers - does anyone know if the phone would be locked? I assumed that because the product page didn't mention any carrier affiliation it wouldn't be locked, but I could be wrong.

It won't be but the store member would have been on the safe side - in any case it costs $30 to unlock from skinny in the worst case scenario
