mcraenz: Just to clarify. If I want Netflix US I should sign up for NZ Netflix then use a DNS service?

Yep, that's how I did it.

Is it that simple? Will this work with Chromecast? I'll be casting from an iPad or Android phone.

DaveDog: DNS4me didn't work for me - I couldn't get netflix or hulu to work with my Apple TV...

I have this interesting thing where my IP changes all the time, every few minutes or more often (Flip)... Before Global Mode (which works fine) I was with Unblock US which sometimes struggled to keep up... Dns4me seems to fail from the start - maybe Unotelly might be the next port of call...

Advice anyone?

Yeah, I'm with Flip and have the same problem.  You need to use a vpn service or find a provider who offers a fixed ip (which Flip doesn't).  I'm changing provider as a result of this problem.

No - You don't...

I'm with Flip and have managed to get this sorted...

I've signed up with UnoTelly and using their DynDNS updater with no-ip. My router has the capability to do the no-ip DDNS - it's all working perfectly!

My understanding is that Chromecast (and the latest Netflix app version on Android) directly access Google's DNS (8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4), and that needs to be prevented before your unlock service will work.

I believe one way of doing this is to block those IP addresses at the router; after attempting (and timing out), the Chromecast will fallback to the DHCP-supplied DNS server (usually then is where you then supply the service-provided ones).

How you do that will depend on what router you/your ISP use.

Hi Dave

Just for the record we support dynamic DNS to ;) actually with us all three of your locations can be Dynamic DNS entries, but you will always have the issue with CGNAT (on any Smart DNS or service that uses IP authentication) that if another user updates their account to use your IP (which is highly possible due to the limited IP pool) you will be using there settings, this becomes a big issue if your Netflix region hopping.

Thanks
Jason k

That's correct most people use static routes in there router to block googles DNS, with the latest android version of Netflix you cant actually block 8.8.8.8 as it doesent fall back, you either have to downgrade the version of Netflix you use or use iptables to redirect 8.8.8.8 to your smart dns.

OK, so I tried it last night.

1.  Signed up with no-ip, and added the settings to the DDNS section of my router (ASSUS)
2. Signed up with dns4me
3.  And put the ddns address in the zones area
4.  Added the dns settings to the modem as per instructions
5.  Couldn't access Netflix or Iplayer at all.

What am I doing wrong?  I did reboot the router several times and waited a bit.

Hi Jmh

This is probably because your dydns is reporting an incorrect IP we block access to any services in the user console for non authenticated IPs this is to stop hbo and other services from detecting our customers being out of country if there ip changes (they will chop your account if they detect a connection from out of country), the easiest way to check is to go to our check page http://dns4me.net/check the first test is for a registered ip if this passes then power cycle your Device and you should be good to go.

If you want to run some more checks just PM me your dns4me username and ill check out your dynamic dns and settings

Thanks
Jason k

Hi jmh

I couldn't PM you back as you have private messages disabled so I have sent an email to the email address you used for your dns4me account :)

Thanks

It was really very simple, I was pretty surprised. I use it with an Apple TV.

The team at DNS4Me are also very onto it, that always helps :)
