Over Christmas I was constantly being invited to join Spotify Premium for the special price of $1 per month for the first 3 months(offer ends 31st Dec). The offer was served up while listening on my Ipad, as well the offer was served up within the app itself so I see this as directly having been offered to me 1 to 1 so had know qualms about qualifying for the deal.  I clicked the in app special offer which took me to Spotify Premium on the Apple Store at $16.99 per month.  I assumed which I think is quite rightly so that although the App said $16.90 in the app store, that i would be charged $1 to my itunes account as per the promo offer.  I have just looked at my credit card and Apple receipt and have been charged the normal $16.99 not impressed.

So offers like this are normally done via their site so they don't have to pay apple the 20%

I would send an email to spotify about it, no point telling apple as spotify are the ones that set the price.

If it was charged by apple, contact apple to log a dispute. I suspect that any deal like that had to be done through the app, otherwise apple will likely take their own cut if done through the apple store.

Also you can't get it if you've ever paid or used a free trial before.

I tried to take advantage of it, but I'd used a free trial, so wouldn't let me. Don't know why they'd send 5+ emails asking me to sign up if I can't get it...

I got sent the same deal, and noted in the fine print that I'd be ineligible due to having done the free trial.

However, I was also offered 3 months for the price of one ($12.99), as a prior Premium user (thanks to the initial trial). This worked for me, and I'm currently enjoying ad-free Spotify for the next 3 months. :-)

I don't think they should have sent the emails to people who already had done the free trial before. It is not as though they wouldn't have records of this.

I'm fairly sure I have not taken up a free trial in the past with Spotify.  I've just lodged a dispute with Apple so lets see what they come back with in response and will report back here for your interest. Hopefully a glitch they will put right, else its me in the wrong or misunderstanding the offer or process lets wait and see.

I agree. But I checked the fine print just in case. Was glad that I did :-)

It is an overseas company as far as I am aware, so probably not covered by any NZ consumer laws either.

TimA: Apple music has been a much better experience for me over Spotify.

I'd be interested to hear why.

The intent of doing this 3 months is so I can compare it to Apple Music, which I've already trialled. I found the latter to have questionable performance at times (on my 15Mbps ADSL2 connection), which is why I'm keen to see how Spotify fares in that regard. So far it hasn't missed a beat.

Anecdotes gonna anecdote, but anybody that has cared to talk to me about it has the opposite opinion.

Is the deal in the OP for family premium or something? Normal price is $12.99. On that note, I signed up to a promo for the family one recently (2 accounts), can't actually remember what the deal was but I suppose I should keep an eye on what I'm billed.

The deal was promoted end of last year. Not available anymore.

If you signup within the app then you pay more because Spotify get charged more, by Apple in this case. If you want it cheaper signup via the Spotify website directly and then login to the app. Hence the $16.99 vs $12.99

If you expand 'in app purchases' list in the App Store you are shown a list of 10 products all with the same name 'Spotify Premium', with a range of prices from $4.99 to $20.99
