May interest some people - spotted this on eBay (it is from Google so not a "fake" product).

Google Home & Chromecast Video Bundle (around $137.50NZD).

Have to use YouShop but works out at a pretty good deal. You essentially get a free Chromecast by purchasing via eBay. Just purchased one.

Sheesh. Just bought one via Google and youshop. Grrr.

My views (except when I am looking out their windows) are not those of my employer.

Yep they work no problems. Take a look at this thread for other people around here with them.

There's probably a YouShop thread somewhere around here.

What I have found with YouShop is it can be eye-wateringly expensive if the item is not packaged appropriately. I bought a bundle of 3 Echo Dots from Amazon and shipped them with YS for $16 - fantastic. They were in a as small a box as they needed.

In the past I've had stuff sent where the retail package was put in a large box with airbags around it - needlessly as the retail package was sufficient. That cost so much it defeated the purpose.

Its as good as the google on your phone IME. I can ask it when KFC closes, and it will tell me. I can ask when KFC at birkenhead closes, and it tells me. I can ask travel time to places it can understand and it works.

Weather works, time works, playing music mostly works, problems getting some stations since I guess it goes for US ones first.

In those cases the higher shipping price but better service of shipito can be better.

I have on 2 occasions had shipito re-pack things, splitting them up into 2 parcels for one and then sent to youshop for economy freight. One was a server case that was significantly cheaper via youshop.

IME with amazon for their own branded things, they seem to have them all sorted to pack quite well, its when you start adding in all sorts of different things to an order they will just pick a giant box and do the bags of air thing.

It's not actually from Google, I purchased and saw the email address so was dubious. (shopchromecast.com)

The page itself says official google store on ebay, but might stop my paypal purchase.

Perhaps not a popular opinion here, but I'm a bit weary of giving google an always-on microphone in my private space. At least with my phone you know it can't be listening all the time because of the battery limitation.

I'm awaiting shipment of my Mycroft, a personal assistant built with a raspberry pi and open source software. I don't know if it will be as good as a Google home, but at least I know it's not spying on me to target ads or whatever.

@JonnyCam it'll be a supplier of Google however the company on eBay is Google. I would say it is fine.

This!!!

You are literally screwed if the supplier does that big box with a plastic bubble packer in it etc.  Literally.

Just put a tinfoil hat over it at night, or whenever you're talking dodgy like.
