I saw this on cheapies earlier . It looks to be a good deal, but some people were saying it could be a pricing error?
You'd buy one of those from Amazon and get a plastic case with a brick in it pus a 32GB MMC with dodgy firmware reporting to be 10TB.
sold out

None of our 3 x 10TB discs at NZD143 orders placed last night at 2115-2145 NZDT have been billed or shipped thus far.
I ordered one too. Expected to ship in 1-2 weeks.
There was also a very cheap 8TB NAS available for a time so not sure if it was a pricing error or if Amazon just had some very good deals that sold out quickly.
either way it will be gone quickly

Yeah I managed to order one of those 16TB raw ones. I doubt it will arrive, but I can hope!
I ordered 2 of them, hope to sell to the community for $300 each.
Didn't get the best reviews. My issue would be the warranty if it dies early, and then all that lost data, which one would need backup for anyway.

How generous of you.
Some of those who ordered early are already reporting HDs shipped. When I ordered it was 1-2 weeks shipping so wouldn't have expected mine to ship. Note that these were sold by (not fulfilled by) Amazon so no reason to think there's anything dodgy about them. And no clear signs this, or the other deals like the $170 for 2x8TB My Duo or $55 for 4TB portable were pricing errors. Yes the price especially for the 10TB was very low, but price for WD 10TBs have been weird recently with frequent deals which were unheard of until about end of March. To be fair, prices until recently have not been much lower per TB than historic deals for other HDs but it does suggest these are being sold cheap for some reason.

No storage is immune to failure especially when you consider the risks of failure not arising from the device itself. (User error plus natural disasters, for many forms or storage power surges, for anything connected malware etc.) Assuming you won't lose data for any device if it's within the warranty period is foolhardy. So you always need backups if you can't afford to lose the data on it.
Amazon reviews are next to useless for determining HD reliability. Frankly there's nothing that's particularly useful that's available to to general public. Even the much vaulted Back Blaze data is of limited utility. So IMO as a general consumer you're best off assuming equal reliability or at most give some minor weighting to warranty periods and manufacturer stats. You're better off choose by length and ease of warranty returns, whether the firmware and HD design fits your requirements etc.
Keep in mind if you want to do this, that some of the white label drives in WD external products have a sleep pin that needs to be driven low for the drive to spin up, and isn't with most SATA/SAS controllers. The fix is to put some kapton tape over that pin.

If you didn't have 3 backups (at least 1 offsite), you didn't care about it anyway.
