That's what I thought about the RTX 3000 series graphics cards. Didn't work out so well for me haha ;-)
Time will sort it all, but yeah we don't know how long it will take. Always felt product release pricing just screwed the true supporters / early adopters before putting it on sale for the rest. That didn't sit well with a customer loyalty concept, but I don't want to hijack this thread any further.

conversely, release pricing is usually the correct pricing. this is where the product development costs are taken into account most accurately. once those costs are recovered, then the sale price can be adjusted to just bom + manufacturing + shipping + markup.
but most people won't fall ill for not being among the first to get new toys.
anyway, even at msrp this would be attractive to those who have been waiting for stock availability. if they saved their (more than) pennies over the last year, this might the opportunity they've been waiting for.

It's usually very far in to a consoles life that most of them start to make any money on hardware. Nintendo is the real exception in recent years favouring unique selling points over the latest hardware so they can turn profit on day one. They usually make up the loss licensing software and subscriptions and when the hardware comes down because there's newer techniques or better parts they eventually turn a profit on each unit. We all know Microsoft wants us all to buy gamepass to make up the difference. They also sometimes reduce cost of they can't sell, Xbox one and 3ds both went this route to get hardware in to homes.
Considering the performance of the cpu,GPU and SSD in these things $800 is a fraction of what a pc capable of this output would cost you. You'd be running $800 for just a gpu and the ssds are a few hundred as well. I know they'll get bulk rates to bring costs down but I find it very difficult imto believe they aren't selling at a loss.
