haydenmarsh: Am i the only one having problems with this app and airplay?


drops connection when iPad goes to lock screen... many have reported 2 mins, mine timed out at 15 mins (lock screen setting)

tried to airplay directly (works with iTunes videos and doesn't hang when locking) but only had black screen and sound... needed to "mirror" to get picture as well....

I believe this is a 'work in the background' setting that some apps ask for? (e.g. google maps)
when given permission, they work even when the screen locks, and maintain the link and activity until another app is selected, might need to look into adding that request/feature to the Lightbox app?

Okay so I'd entered my credit card details and it hung. I restarted the browser and it hung again. Clicked on the validate link and I got a message like invalid token. So applied for another token, got the email, followed the link and got the same invalid token message. Then tried to restart the account process but got an already registered message.

If it wasn't for someone posting the link to iTunes then I would be stuck.

Anyway, logged on and appears to be working well. Good effort.

Will try it at work tomorrow.


Yeah I had the same issue - I switched to my mac to finish the process but kept getting the same errors as you. Will try to finish it on the iPad app tomorrow.

This is exactly what I discovered last night. By disabling auto-lock on the iPad, my AirPlay streaming woes were solved.

Ideally I'd like to see an implementation like the NetFlix app, where there are playback controls on the lock screen when the Lightbox app is streaming to the Apple TV, but at the very least there needs to be a way to continue the stream when the screen goes to sleep.

Direct Airplay worked for me, although I have found that to be hit and miss with other apps in the past. Yet another reason why I see this iPad/Apple TV Airplay setup as a stop gap solution. My wife (the official "non-technical" user in our house) wrinkled her nose at the thought of using that as our primary control mechanism for it.

It seems this could be viable, and I may well be tempted if (when?) it appears as an option on my Samsung blue ray player with Smart Hub. WAF is zero using the laptop.

Heres my findings from last night (sorry if this is a duplicate; can't seem to find my original post anywhere, but I was sure I'd submitted it).

Once I discovered that my Airplay woes were down to the AutoSleep settings on my iPad, I was able to mostly successfully stream an episode of Orphan Black (42 minutes). I say "mostly" because at one point I paused playback for a couple of minutes, and it didn't resume. That may have been a glitch in the Matrix though, so I'll keep an eye on it to see if it will be a recurring pattern.

Streaming quality was pretty good, although it did tend to drop a few frames. This was mostly noticeable during panning shots, but was still quite watchable. It just reminded me that I was watching content streamed from the Internet rather than a terrestrial or satellite TV broadcast. This is not an issue we suffer from when streaming NetFlix or Hulu, which is pretty much indistinguishable from traditional TV broadcasts, providing our Internet connection behaves. However, that being said, it was by far the best streaming performance we've seen from any non-geoblocked NZ based SVOD service.

I know its been mentioned already, but its so important that it bears repeating. There needs to be a way to resume playback for an episode, and this needs to persist across all supported devices. Currently if you stop playback of an episode, it takes you to the landing page of the next episode in that series. If you didn't watch the full episode, it should take you back to the landing page for that episode, and pressing Play should prompt if you want to resume playback from your last position, or start from the beginning.

All in all, so far I'm pretty impressed. As I said earlier, streaming quality is the best I've seen for a NZ SVOD service, and runs rings around Quickflix and all the FTA On Demand services we've tried. And while the content there so far is pretty impressive, there needs to be some way to differentiate it from NetFlix and Hulu. I think adding access to lots of classic Kiwi and Aussie content could be the key there. There are lots of great shows from this part of the World that NetFlix & Hulu don't often touch with their more US based focus.

Well, looks like the content selection is good (surprised at how many kids offerings there are, even), but without any support to watch on Android devices (even in a browser, apparently!), it's less enticing to sign up unfortunately. I realise it's beta, and I must say the performance and quality is better than I expected, but I would hope by the time it gets to official launch, there's some decent device support available. But, a very encouraging start thus far aside from that.

Which is not really a Lightbox issue.



I'm not sure what you are saying here.   I can see the screen on my TV via Chromecast  but as soon as I press Play the TV screen goes blank with no sound but it is playing on the PC Screen.  DRM??  It works fine for the likes of SkyGo and other apps..

Lastnight the site was quite slow, browsing between different shows you could count seconds between click and render.
Watching Sons of Anarchy and frame skipping was noticable, almost annoying but still ok. I have a higher tolerance to that than my wife.
This was about 9:30 lastnight.

As with most other comments, supporting more devices, and ditching silverlight would be good.
I know to some degree this can be painful and driven by content owners as well.

So far though its a great start.

Was streaming through to about 11pm last night.
Haven't had any frame skipping issues since I started using the service on Friday - pretty much been streaming about 5-6 hrs a day binge streaming

So what exactly did you do to stop the timeout... switch "autolock" to never?

For you folks reporting frame drops, it would help a lot if you could be more specific than just "FRAME DROP, ARGH!"

Please post:

- ISP
- DNS (ISP or third party)
- VPN or not
- Device
- Browser or app
- Date/time

If you are in then help now...

Thats exactly what I did. 

Long-term this needs to be addressed, but its an acceptable workaround for us for now.
