I find this rather confusing, and it's more curiousty than anything, but we have found that some of the kids shows in particular seem to suffer a not huge but noticeable slideshow effect - unsure if it's dropping frames regularly, or if they're actually streamed at a lower frame rate or something. We've found this on Bananas in Pyjamas, Thomas the Tank Engine and Fireman Sam (about the only ones we've tried).

Have not noticed it on other shows like Orange is the New Black, Modern Family etc.

Just curious as to whether some of these shows are simply streamed at lower frame rates or otherwise impacted? I know others have reported frame drops, playback stutter etc, but for us it seems to be limited to specific kids titles. Maybe it's just coincidence we haven't seen it on other shows yet?

solaybro: As reported in the other thread 'House' doesn't have the option to play any of the episodes in all seasons available (play button is missing). PhantomNVD has tried on his iPad and his laptop (chrome and IE) and he could play most episodes.

I'm using:

Windows 8
Chrome
No extensions enabled
Vodafone-exTCL network ADSL

Thanks.

Season 2 has apparently been published, even though no episodes are available in it, which is causing the weird behaviour.

I'll throw it at our content operations people and they'll get it sorted.

Hi guys,

I've gone through this thread and logged all feedback and issues with individual videos. We'll dip into this thread to grab examples of streaming issues and use them as examples to look at for our video platform provider and CDN vendor.

We do have a couple of known defects, that I want to highlight:

  • There are some issues around registration (people not getting properly activated etc.)
  • The iPad app will start stuttering after between 5 and 10 playbacks, due to a memory leak issue. Simply killing the app and restarting will sorting the issue.
  • There's a mobile browser registration issue, that makes the page hand on credit card information
  • Any missing episodes are expected, but empty seasons, video that won't play or weird looking descriptions are not expected

Suggestions are very welcome. Autohiding the cursor in the player, resuming play and improving smarts around lining up the next episode are all on our radar as improvements. Please keep the ideas flowing - I may not respond to everything, but I (and my colleagues) read it.

Hitching and stuttering on all video playback. I did A/B comparisons with Netflix and there is something preventing smooth playback on Lightbox.
As well as testing across Chrome, Firefox and IE, I tested my PC monitor at 50 and 60Hz and my TV at 23.976 and 24.000 fps. No combinations gave smooth playback.

I've noticed this with kids shows also.  "Mister Maker" is a good example as it frequently has fast movement against a plain background.  It looks like the videos have been deinterlaced, as when small items are moving, you frequently see them duplicated in the frame at half intensity, merging into one as they slow down.

  • Xtra VDSL
  • Xtra DNS
  • No VPN
  • HTPC Win7 32-bit
  • IE 11  - Tried with Sliverlight hardware video acceleration both on and off.
  • HDMI
  • Time 05/08 evening
  • Mister Maker (various)
Let me know if you want more specific examples.  There was a scene in one episode where peanuts were flying around the screen where it stood out like the dogs proverbials.

fahrenheit:Firefly (Season 1 Ep 15)

This itself is a bit of mystery as there were only 14 episodes made.

On rMBP screen
Image quality and motion, good to very good

On rMBP airplay to ATV3, Panny Plasma 50
Image quality and motion, average. Video motion not smooth, but ok. Some audio slightly off sync if I moved ahead to later sequences, sometimes, not always

On Ipad Air
Image quality and motion excellent, no audio sync issues

On iPad Air airplay to ATV3, Panny Plasma 50
Image quality and motion excellent, no audio sync issues

I'd happily watch on the rMBP, but would not airplay. I'd happily watch on iPad Air, definitely airplay that, the result on the TV was a normal TV experience for image and motion

There was no other online activity at the time of the test, will run another test tonight with browsing, and then with downloading

iPad LightBox app 'lost connection to the internet'. Rebooting the device did not work as well as standard fixes. Resolved by uninstalling and reinstalling LightBox app.

E15 claims to be "The Message" which was the title of E12 and is only 44min long, so I suspect it should be E12 and E13 they have, not E13 and E15. The movie was Serenity, so completely different name, and is about 2 hours long.

Hmm, that has the first episode split into two parts. But we're getting off-topic here :)

Have now tested with a Windows 7 machine (also 64bit) and it had an older version of Silverlight installed. That stuttered, so I updated it and it too stuttered just like my Windows 8.1.

I also tested the same clips with an Ipad Air and had smooth playback. Certainly looks like a Silverlight problem (at least the 64bit version).

Following on from my post in the other thread yesterday, I tested the second episode of Battlestar Galactica season one as well as the first three episodes of The Thick of It. All had same screen tearing in the video. I tried it in both Firefox 28 and Chrome, both had this. I definitely noticed it in full screen but don't remember if it was also when in the browser as well.

  • ISP and service: Bigpipe DSL
  • DNS: Bigpipe
  • VPN or not: No
  • Device (Windows/Mac/iOS): Windows 64bit
  • Browser or app: Chrome
  • HDMI out, dual monitor, Airplay: Single Monitor
  • Date/time: 05/08/2014 19:30 to 22:30
  • Programme (Season/Episode): See above
  • Time issue happened within the episode: Occured throughout all the episodes, no specific times noted
  • Issue description: Screen tearing of the video.

This doesn't occur when watching flash videos. I didn't have silverlight installed until I started using Lightbox, so have no other silverlight videos to compare it to. I might try changing hardware acceleration in the Silverlight settings makes any difference, or see if there is anything in my graphics card settings to help.
