Lightbox is upgrading its technology platform and will shortly launch Lightbox Movies, an on-demand pay per view movie service; Standard and Premium TV subscription options with enhanced features such as temporary downloads and Lightbox Kids, a dedicated safe area for children’s content.

Hema Patel, General Manager of Lightbox explains the significance of the platform upgrade. “We built the original Lightbox platform in the very early days of streaming services for New Zealand. Since then, SVOD services have matured and Kiwis are looking for streaming platforms that can deliver a variety of content, through a range of commercial models.

“We’ve decided to move to the Brightcove platform, which will give us the capability to expand and develop Lightbox as a media platform in a number of directions. It’s the foundational capability we need to fully realise our media aspirations in future.

“Most immediately, we will launch a tiered service for Lightbox TV, allowing customers to choose between a Standard or a Premium subscription – and extend Lightbox’s offering into on demand movies. Adding Transactional Video On Demand (TVOD) capability to our existing SVOD model will mean that both existing Lightbox subscribers and casual visitors will be able to rent the latest movies without a subscription. With over 300,000 subscribers, we’re in a great position to open up these new options to a significant number of NZ families.”

The platform upgrade will be completed in April. Following the switch-over, customers will see a number of changes.

Existing Lightbox TV subscribers will be able to log in to Lightbox and rent pay per view movies. People who don’t have a Lightbox TV subscription will be able to create a profile and rent pay per view movies with no contracts, no strings attached.

Lightbox TV subscribers will have a choice between a Standard and Premium subscription. Customers on the Premium service will be able to download all TV content available on Lightbox to their mobile devices, making it available to view offline when they’re travelling or away from an internet or mobile connection. In addition, they will be able to seamlessly watch over multiple devices and enjoy higher quality viewing at lower bandwidth requirements. Spark customers on eligible mobile and broadband plans will continue to get a Standard Lightbox subscription included in their plan – or can choose to pay a small top up charge to access the Premium subscription.

All Lightbox TV customers will be able to access a dedicated Kids TV area, packed with fun and educational TV shows that kids love. TV content will be available via the normal subscription packages, while children’s and family movies will be available to purchase through Lightbox Movies but only once an adult has consented to the purchase. Password pin protection between adult and child profiles will make it easy and safe for parents to keep their children entertained.

Movie titles for launch are still being confirmed, but Lightbox plan to have hundreds of titles immediately available with many more added every week. There’s also an exciting array of new TV in the pipeline, with the second series of The Handmaid’s Tale dropping with a double episode, exclusively on Lightbox Thursday 26 April.

It's reassuring that LB will continue on for some time. There are times I use it when Netflix and Prime Video don't have what I want. Hopefully it remain relevant and continue to add new content, for the sake of choice.

Totally - be interesting to see where/how they compete against the players you mention, plus Apple/iTunes movies which seem to have a reasonable selection for rent and purchase even in NZ - fairly timely releases of new content as well.

For any given amount of newer movies and newer TV series, what is the ratio between exclusive to one, and not? There must be many contents that are not only on the one local provider? In our case, LB, NF and Sky

I quite often watch google play movies. The app is available for all my smart devices and the prices are reasonable for anything but the newest releases.

I'm sure if I looked closer I'd figure out which distributor, but there are some new releases which come more reasonable than others.

Will the movies be DD5.1 or will they be same format as Lightbox is now, analogue.

 

There's already heaps of choices for pay per view movies, and to my knowledge Apple is the most competitive, catch is need Apple TV.

 

UHD movies for price of HD, and 99 cent movie of week.

 

 

 

I think it'll be a hard market to break into. As new releases SD $6.99 and $7.99 HD seem to be set prices no matter who's supplying.

All in all though at least this move means Lightbox is here to stay a bit longer, as I'm waiting for next season of The Americans, which had coming soon last time I looked. Wasn't going to pay for basic and SoHo because of interest in one program.

Yeah, the choice to charge extra is highly determined by the content offerer's business model.  There is a higher cost for the content, a higher cost to deliver (either via CDN, satellite or terrestrially.  Lightbox only went HD from the start probably in the hope that HD at $13/mth would be sufficiently attractive to get subs.  And we know how that turned out.  But that was a business decision.  If it did offer in SD it'd probably have been at $10/mth.  Would that have changed to consumer proposition?  We'll never know.

 

Apple choosing to offer UHD at HD prices - and wear the cost difference to force smaller less capitalised players to match and eat the cost difference.  Easy when UHD makes up such a small proportion of the market.  One could argue that it amounts to market foreclosure, but at the end of the day such an offering is a business choice by Apple to wear the cost rather than pass it on to the consumer.  You can guarantee that the consumer will place zero value on something thats free though.

 

BTW, you'll probably get S5 of The Americans from late March or early April when I'm tucking into the the sixth and final season.

The platform upgrade was due to be completed in April.  

 

Has anyone seen the PPV movies yet?  I cant seem to find them. 

 

Any non-Lightbox subscribers been able to set up a profile and rent movies?

If lightbox managed to do a deal for HBO type content they could really get some traction here... keen to see the latest Westworld (s2) but can’t justify US$45 for a Direct TV sub just for one single program (though I’m sure I’d enjoy other SYFY content too if I had that sort of money ‘spare’... a local company offering SyFy channel content would definitely get my money though!
