I hate it when the same old comment is said, I made a serious error of judgement. Thats rubbish. he knew what he was doing and decided to take a risk of not being caught. He got caught. He hasnt really admitted it, as thats by default, its been disclosed. Better to say that I made a choice, and I got caught. No misjudgement applied. The term misjudgement gets abused IMHO.

I'd like him to genuinely apologise to his fans, and perhaps give something back such as a TV ad on drink driving. Not a freebie, get paid, but put a little back. Especally for younger rugger fans

I am not sure how much he was over by (I know the numbers but as a non-drinker I am not sure what it means). Was he seriously over?

You can protect yourself against poor decision making by preparing in advance. Taxi too and From the event. Problem solved.

Even easier, don't drink and drive, EVER

RIP Dan Vickerman. My thoughts are with his wife and 2 young children. Seems like with all the references at the bottom of some of the articles he may have taken his own life.

I have mixed emotions if that is the case. I hope I am never in a position to feel that is my only solution.

It's been a tough few weeks for Rugby!

I used rugbypass.com and dns4Me to good effect last season.

I should mention I'm on mobile only too. Would it still work?

Wow, just WOW. What a game between the Crusaders and the Highlanders. Even I, as a staunch Crusaders supporter, was looking at 27-6 and thinking it would take a miracle.  If you want to see mental and physical fortitude, that would the ideal game to watch.

The defending the Highlanders had to do in the first 20, probably was the difference in the end. Liam Squire was immense those first few minutes, but still.

Bryn Hall is very quick with the ball, it's nice to see. Seta was an excellent acquisition for us. Another good game for Israel Dagg, though for me, he should have been at Full Back.

Some of those Highlanders set plays were very slick.

I hate to say it, but I agree with ChrisR about an urgent mid-season change regarding the rules of aerial competition. Someone is going to end up with a life changing injury.  It's a difficult one, but I don't recall this being as bad previously (obviously there are exceptions).

Seems like most games there is a challenge in the air that looks like it could go badly.

So the Hurricanes get found out by the Chiefs.
Easy to rack up huge scores against the foreign competition minnows, but as soon as they come up against another Kiwi team it is a different story. Yes it was a horrible night weather-wise, but both teams were playing in the same rain.
The Chiefs have benefited two weeks in a row through opposition players being red or yellow carded. In past years it has normally been the Chiefs on the receiving end of the cards.
I do worry about the effect of players ducking into a tackle to cause the tackler to ride up and get (if he's lucky) penalised, or carded.

You're way too dismissive of what the Hurricanes did. The Hurricanes had to play really well to get those scorelines. Both games had periods where the Hurricanes took greater risks and didn't do so well. Unlike, the Hurricanes of the 90s they readjusted quite quickly.

The Hurricanes weren't "found out"!

The game didn't "detect the true nature or character of; expose" the Hurricanes. It would be unrealistic to expect that one of the top NZ teams would thrash the other. It was realistic to expect what we got, a result that was close right until the end. Given past turnarounds late in a game, it wouldn't have been surprising for the Hurricanes to run in a try in the last minute to prevent the loss.

Of the two main influences on the scoreline, I'd say one of those unfairly penalised the Hurricanes and favoured the Chiefs:

1. The weather had the greatest impact and produced the lower scoreline. Both teams would normally put on a lot more points against each other. The consequences of the weather were pretty even for both teams.

2. The cards handed out, as you mention. Overall I thought the Hurricanes got the short end of that stick. The referee made some poor decisions when discounting legitimate complaints from both teams. Perhaps he thought the team captains were just attempting to manipulate him.

As an aside, the Chiefs were lucky not to get a red card given the current refereeing priorities. If Riccitelli had gamed the high-tackle and stayed down - thankfully he didn't - there would have been a red card.

A long way behind the refereeing issues were the small differences where the Chiefs had a slight advantage:

  • Fumbles and knockons from Hurricanes second-tier players dissipated a lot of the pressure building up on the Chiefs. I thought that Chiefs team did slightly better and they probably fumbled more at the right end of the field.
  • Smarter and more successful kicking from the Chiefs. Even if you take out the Hurricanes two (or was there three) long kicks that went too and came back to the kicking spot, the Chiefs still shaded them.

In other areas the Hurricanes did better.

..................... and there was the late, no arms tackle on TJP which wasn't even penalised.

And then there were stats like the Chiefs spending minutes in the opposition 22 in the first half, the Hurricanes 22 seconds!
I completely agree that some refereeing decisions were not evenly applied.
Unfortunately I haven't been able to rewatch the match as my recording was blighted by rain fade so I haven't had a chance to look at some aspects of the game. Particularly the difference between intentional foul play (shoulder charges) vs accidental (slip up high tackles) and how they were punished.
The Chiefs have demonstrated they have a great starting lineup but are really weakened when their substitutes are brought on.
I do think the Hurricanes were found out. They were the only NZ franchise that hadn't played a local derby. They were outstanding in their first two games, but the teams they were playing were woeful (I may have to eat my words when the Chiefs play the Rebels next week). You can throw a blanket over all five NZ franchises they are that close.
I am worried about Barrett's kicking for the ABs.
