Hammerer:

Dingbatt: The Hurricanes were lucky to beat the Chiefs at home. If they play the way they did on Friday next Saturday, they will get slaughtered.

Not lucky although they did slacken off when they thought it was won.

Only two days before that statement, Dingbat wrote “Hurricanes deserved semifinalists. Despite only 30% possession in the first half, led at half time.
With the wind and possession in the second half, put it beyond doubt.” So ....

I'm glad people quote me as if I'm an expert.
You need to include my statement that the home team won yet again if you are going to quote me. The Chiefs squandered their chance by letting two bonus points slip in the weeks preceding the Hurricanes round-robin match. That would have made the Hamilton match a win only scenario for the home quarter.
My comment about the Hurricanes being deserved winners had more to do with the Chief's deficiencies than their dominance, and was made as the game finished.
Having watched the Crusaders put the Sharks to the sword the following night, I still believe the Hurricanes will need a miracle to beat them in Christchurch if they only play as well as they did against the Chiefs.

If they do manage to beat the Crusaders, the Hurricanes will be praying for a Warratahs win in SA, otherwise they face a killer journey to the republic for next week's final, at altitude.

Crap competition format. It has had its day.

And yes, lucky on reflection, because Perenara's try was awarded despite there being "no clear evidence" when the on-field decision was 'no try'. And McKenzie's Stooopid floating pass in the first minute that led to Savea's intercept try.

They've done it before so no miracle is required. It's neither inexplicable nor against the laws of science nor requiring divine intervention.

But the Crusaders do look better than last year so it is a more difficult task without the Hurricane's usual momentum. But again, they've beaten the Crusaders after a not-good-enough string of recent games. So that too is entirely possible.

I am unsurprised by the result, though it's to the credit of the Hurricanes Rugby of the past 3 years that even 15 minutes out I was still worried there could be a Canes miracle, though to be fair I was very surprised they didn't seem to fire much of a shot most of the game. Laumape was almost completely unused and whilst I do think to some degree that was a result of the Crusaders defensive effort, I didn't really feel the canes played to their potential or in the style in which they normally play.

Mo'unga would surely be the form 10 in NZ right now. I am not saying he should take BB's starting jersey in the AB's by any stretch, however, if BB was injured, I would have very few reservations putting him on the field.

It's going to be a big ask for the Lions or Waratahs to troupe back to NZ and win against the Crusaders now. If a team could do it, the Lions are for my money the only chance. I am hoping the Waratahs win in SA.

I'd like the Lions to win just to reverse last year's final position and see how good they can do over here.

So is there any chance the Waratah's can win a final against the Crusaders like they did in 2014? They lose a few advantages this time but maybe they are peaking at the right time? They've still got several players who were there in 2014.

Ahem, you mean the final that the referee apologised afterward for incorrectly awarding the Waratahs a penalty ? :) (Yes, one day I might let it go).

I don't mind too much who comes over to be honest.

I can empathise with your pain but I have no memory of the entire season - none at all. I must have watched the final on TV but can't remember a single event.

Sadly, this season has had quite a few decisions I don't want to remember either. I'm dropping Sky Sports next month because Super Rugby administration is a mess.

So as expected, Lions too strong in Jo'Berg. It was a great game, and the Lions have some great players. The Waratahs played well, but the altitude and travel eventually told.

Will be a cracker final. I expect the Crusaders to prevail so long as they don't give away cards etc.

Savage Crusaders playing like ABs. Charismatic Lions playing with vintage SA strength and kicks.

Media are saying they know who the next All Blacks coach is.

Hopefully everybody play like they did last match and it will be a cracker. But somehow I doubt it. Usually the travelling team (SA <-> Australasia) will struggle.

"There is no clear evidence the player is in touch"

Ahem, yes there is!

Aside from this some observations from the weekends Rugby.

Brayden Ennor needs to work on his defense.

Bryn Hall must be within spitting distance of a potential AB's call up. He has played out of his skin for the Crusaders this year.

Looks like Tafua is gone for the season! This is a crying shame I think. I was looking forward to him getting a test cap.

The number of head knocks Crotty gets is very very worrying I think. I feel is easily our best 12/13 overall, but I don't feel it's worth risking his health.

Dane Coles probably won't play in the Rugby Championship, but I no longer feel anxious at all, so long as Taylor is fit to play. I am not sure who I feel the second best right now. Nathan Harris does nothing for me when he has played for the AB's. I wonder where Ricatelli sits in the pecking order?

1. image is not "clear"

2. similar to parallax error, viewing something from above which appears to overlap the touch line does not mean it touches the line.

That was taken from the low res stuff.co.nz video. The refs have access to far greater resolution. Also, they have equipment that allows them to have frame by frame across 2 camera angles. Even though it's not clear, to me it's clear that the white line is breached by a yellow jersey as indicated and it's clear that there is shadow under the ball which wouldn't be present if the ball was on the ground.

They really need to have that split screen available on TV, where they can go frame by frame from multiple angles concurrently, as it's not obvious to someone watching on TV, regardless of if the TMO has that info or not. I feel like they used to do that, but I've not seen it recently?

I personally thought that was in touch first, then lost forward in goal anyway, but it was all within mm.

As it went up as a try, TMO found it was inconclusive so stuck with ref's decision - no problem with that, it's the process working as it should be. Benefit of the doubt to the attacking team or something?

IIRC, the ref said to the TMO

"I am happy with the grounding, I will give a try unless you can tell me the player is in touch" or something to that effect.

TMO says "there is no clear evidence the player is in touch so your original decision stands",.

Regarding higher resolution video -

yes there is presumably one single frame where the jersey of the player overlaps the touch line when viewed from above. He likely has thousands of frames to view

perhaps he missed that one frame, perhaps he can't see blades of grass moving showing the jersey touched the line, or maybe jersey doesn't count??

but he was told specifically not to look at the grounding.

is it fair? well there is no time during a live game to undertake a 10 day judicial review with a panel of experts. maybe the question should have been try or no try?

Look, at the end of the day, I agree the margins were very small. I think the issue was the question that was asked first. I would have called it the same way had Bridge of scored the same way for example. It would have been a real shame if 7 points or less had separated the final scores.
