Those 2 second half tries were stunners. I loved the pictures of the French coaching staff when they were scored.

That last try was amazing, but can anyone explain please why it was allowed when the TMO went back to what looked like a huge forward pass, re watched the video, which showed it as a huge forward pass, passer was about 2m in front of the 5m line, catcher caught it about 6m in front of 5m line, yet he still gave it as a try??

I was in the pub so couldn't hear the commentary so maybe it was explained there.

Long story short, it wasn't a forward pass.

The referee asked for the TMO to have a look at the pass, he looked at it and said it was fine.

In rugby and league, to determine if a pass is forward you are looking at how the ball comes out of the hands and the initial angle of the ball. You can't take a fixed line on the field and say that a pass is forward because the player caught the ball from in front of where it was passed from.

I can't find any way to see the "friendly" between the Crusaders and Hurricanes Friday night? Is it being televised?

I get the explanation but it still seems bizarre to me, and certainly not what has traditionally been applied in my experience.

this article is quite funny - not referring to that game, but rather this interpretation of the rules.

http://www.stuff.co.nz/the-press/sport/rugby/8648446/Laurie-Mains-irate-at-forward-pass-rulings

One of the outcomes of this 'momentum' interpretation is that sometimes passes that are, according to this momentum interpretation, not forward are still ruled forward if the passer gets tackled in the act of passing since this makes the forward momentum of the ball much more obvious.

I took a look at the RWC Qf France vs NZ from 2007, and it could well be argued that this is basically what happened.  the so called forward pass was actually directed backwards relative to the player but because the guy was being tackled his momentum was instantly stopped, but the balls momentum wasn't, hence the ball travelled 'forwards' relative to the player but the pass wasnt a forward pass.  So I guess all that moaning by NZers after that game is totally unjustified :P (im only slightly trolling here :P )

I tend to agree that if they actually started to rule like that youtube video, it would be wrong. But by the same token, if you started ruling that player B had to catch the ball from a point on the field behind player A, that would also be wrong. So then it becomes a subjective thing.

Not sure which forward pass you are talking about in that game, there were two ;)

I tend to think the very short pass to the guy running off the shoulder was a mile forward, the other one perhaps had some 'drift' so it might have appeared more forward than it actually was (but that was probably the one that people felt was forward).

But I think we can all agree that the important thing here is we are the current world cup holders :P

What a great win by the Crusaders. That Bonus point try was epic, and DC played the best I have seen him all year. Very nice to see a comfortable win. Hopefully they can string a few together, it's been a while since they have put on 3-4 good performances in a row.

I say dump the old guys train up the new guys (apart from Richie and Dan) if they are serious about the next WC.

I am dead serious.

Yah unless you are failing to communicate, it doesn't seem you thought this through.. You bring 15 new players into the team, you lose the winning culture, you lose the buddy system, you lose the experience. You can't really do what you are suggesting unless you want to see them turn into the Wallabies who are in complete disarray. After 4 weeks of training together, the Wallabies must have knocked on or lost the ball in contact or made handling errors that professional ballers shouldn't make often, last night. It was fairly horrific last night between them and the Lions. The Lions deserved to win.

yeah I think I am failing to communicate.

the coaches should be thinking of new blood for the new WC, and cannot rely on old blood however amazing they currently are.

todd blackadder lasted what 12 months as AB captain before retiring out of WC, the great tana hung up his black jersey 2 years before a WC to give 'sir' Richie the chance to be who he is ...

'sir' Richie to be the best form 7 in 2015? I seriously doubt it
DC to be the best form 10 in 2015? well unless he's like Stephen larkham who seems to play better with one arm and duct tape ... I'm not sure, but ... well what do I know about sports ... all I can see is these 2 guys have the highest chance amongst the other form blacks

but yes, they need to slowly "drip feed" the young guns, but don't drip too slowly or we won't retain the WC

They already have been/are.

RWC was in 2011, so we have had 1 full season and 3 tests in the second season after RWC

Who did they blood in 2012: Brodie Retallick, Luke Romano, Same Cane, Aaron Smith, Beauden Barrett, Julian Savea, Ben Tameifuna, Dane Coles, Tawera Kerr-Barlow

And so far in 2013: Ben Afeaki, Jeremy Thrush, Steven Lautua, Charles Piutau and Matt Todd.

So specifically in terms of carter: we have cruden and barrett
In terms of richie: cane and todd.

There is not a whole lot more time to start with completely unknown new options, and exactly why would you when the replacements have looked pretty good and are improving?

that's true ... but there are a few positions where we are a bit thin with young guns like 1, 2, 7, 9, 10, 12, 13

let's say the old ones don't make it, these positions do not have at least 2 young ones to cover.

you can't just have one guy (or even 2 for some positions like hooker, fly half) owning the jersey and sleep well at night ...

anyway what do I know ... I can't even tell when a charge down is not an intentional knock on

Congratulations to the Chiefs for winning the Super Rugby 2013.

Those who say Cruden should replace Carter would have been given plenty of evidence to the contrary tonight however.
