I know this isn't related to Union, but this is awesome. Seeing this from anyone is amazing. Made me smile. Needed an up today!
Another financial hit for NZ Rugby. The upcoming Sky rights issue means that NZR either stump up ~$7.5 million or see their stake diluted to ~1.5%
This has been quite an interesting situation to watch unfold. I don't profess to any knowledge on how these contracts are formed or what clauses might be in them, but it seems a meatheaded position for them to take. Presumably, they have offers elsewhere to make a decision like this, but I am curious on what terms they departed... Did they get a portion of payout or what recourse would RA have against them for early termination? Perhaps it was just decided everyone walk away immediately without penalty, probably the best case scenario and RA and Reds don't have to pay their entire salaries.
Given they are said to have played a signficant part of RA's Wallabies plans, it does seem a shame to have ended like this.

RU with no scrums and maul? isn't that league?
Is it just me but........................ Wellington rugby have my money for this season. Unlike other discretionary spend organisations such as the NZSO, they have made absolutely no attempt to engage with their season ticket holders through any form of news letter to try and just stay engaged. They have a large number of players under contract, why haven't they got them phoning round, speaking to the kids, keeping them engaged as well?
Are other unions as bad?

That is not nice to read. I had been aware RA was considered admin heavy, it had been under criticism for it, but 40% cuts is a lot of jobs lost!
@cshwone I'd be surprised if any Rugby clubs were doing as you suggest. I am not a ticket holder for the Crusaders but I didn't see any mention of QA's etc. Perhaps suggest it via social media (without being snarky).

50% of NZR staff are being let go so it shouldn't be surprising. If the top line is slashed the cost base has to follow.

I didn't say surprising, I did say it wasn't pleasant to read. Even if it's expected, it's unpleasant, and they were struggling horribly before this whole virus thing got started.
I like the idea of an Orange Card sort of. Hopefully, to some degree it will ensure more "correct" decisions get made around what is a red card or not.
Not as impressed by the idea of a 15 minute sin-binning. 10 Minutes is long enough. It's not in my opinion, much fun watching teams play with 14 people, even when the team you support is benefitting from it.

Looks like they went for option B and saw a stake that had a paper value of $20m at time of signing diluted down to $3.1million. The article below is paywalled so I extract the financial details:
https://www.nzherald.co.nz/business/news/article.cfm?c_id=3&objectid=12336798
Sky Network Television revealed today NZ Rugby did not participate in its $157 million rights issue, which closed Monday - which means the union's stake in the pay-TV broadcaster has been heavily diluted.
What was once a 5 per cent NZ Rugby stake worth just over $20 million as part of an "innovative deal" is now a 1.5 per cent holding worth just over $3.1m based on the current share price.
NZ Rugby was granted its 5 per cent share of Sky as part of the pair's new five-year Sanzaar deal, which kicks off next season (understood by the Herald to be worth a total $400m over five years).
The October 2019 deal saw NZ Rugby issued with just over 21.8m Sky shares at 92 cents, valuing them at $20.06m.
Last week, Sky issued cheap shares in a bid to shore-up its balance sheet. The heavily discounted rights issue saw $157m of new equity priced at 12c per share- a 63.6 per cent discount on last Wednesday's closing price of 33c (the stock was recently trading at 15.2c).
I'm thoroughly enjoying the Dan Carter signing already. I don't know how much he'll play but the internal conflict it'll cause Crusaders supporters is worth ten times his $1800 a week contract.
Jas777: Do you really want him to be playing? If he is then that means Barrett is either injured or playing badly.
