Even with our epic RWC-choke syndrome (Boks are #1 in RWC stats), we still seemed to be anchored in the top 3...
NZ has won 1/3 of all the world cups. How is that “epic RWC-choke syndrome?”
Because we were supposed to win all of them. Every RWC we compete in - the only acceptable outcome is to win the whole thing.
It's not to play off for 3rd/4th. It's not even to just make it to the final. Heaven forbid we go out in a quarter final...
Anyone saying the AB expectation at any RWC is not to win it (realistically win it, not hoping) should maybe double-check that expectation with the ABs themselves.
Unfortunately, because we win so much (outside of RWC), the question of AB-RWC-choking is an often commented talking point. Often raised by non-AB supporters wanting to get under the skin of glory-basking AB fans. Like the time one of my Belgian-based (yes, he was actually Belgian or Dutch) work-mates deliberately changed his Skype avatar to a French flag with the text "18-20" superimposed over it right after we choked in 2007.
They most definitely talk about it in overseas media. 2011 and 2015 addressed the imbalance to some degree.
I mean, if the ABs are so good, why don't they win the RWC with the same win-ratio percentage? If we did, then we should've won 7/9 (closest to 76%) of all RWCs.
Btw, SA has also won 1/3 of all RWCs, however, didn't compete in 2 of them. So, really the Boks have a 43% RWC win-ratio, compared to our 33%.
Stupid expectations doesn't make NZs performances chokes. We don't always have the best team. Calling tournaments that are unsuccessful chokes is dumb.

Maybe we could split off another thread that just argues about Ian Foster over and over, day after day, and leave this one as a general rugby union discussion thread?
To analyse the problem properly of how poorly our players are performing the coaches are obviously a big factor too... so nothing wrong with members posting on this thread about the coaches.
We don't need Hansen to tell us how poor Mark Robinson & others are on the board overall, we have all known for ages... also as the media have pointed out, Hansen has conveniently overlooked that him & the former CEO Steve Tew combined to green-light Fosters appointment.

No they didn't. Check your facts.
A panel heard two coaches proposals and made a recommendation.

Not saying Hansen & Tew had the final say, nor was the media... saying that with Hansen & Tew's recommendation to the NZRU Board it would've given Foster a pretty good advantage to get the job.
Handle9: This is getting ridiculous from NZR. Robinson only endorsing Foster through the South African leg is crap. If he’s the right guy endorse him through to the World Cup, if he’s not get rid of him.
This is very reminiscent of the stuff that went on in 1991.
I have said this a few times in this thread, but what an outstanding and amazing group of women we have that represent NZ in 7's and 15's. Could you ask for better role models? Michaela Blyde is exceptional. Imagine scoring 6 tries in a single game of Rugby!
Sadly, they won't get gold this time around, Australia seem to have the metal on them right now. I am a little surprised to be honest, as Australia didn't look like they had much chance based on earlier performances, but they really seem to rise to the level of their opponents and there was some outstanding defense.
Mark Robinson is in Birmingham at the Commonwealth Games, escaping all the pressure here... the bloke is a gutless wonder, should be sacked immediately.
The Mens 7's were brave despite poor discipline. They put absolutely everything into that semi, but 5 against any 7 would be tough, against Fiji Mens 7's near impossible.
Bronze won't be the result either team will be happy with. A tough pill to swallow for everyone I imagine.
More classiness from the Womens 7's team. Asked about the hair-pulling incident many believe should have resulted in a penalty try which likely would have changed the outcome of the game, Portia Woodman instead reflected the blame onto herself for having her hair out and flying around.

Robinson is playing the old wait & see game trying to protect himself, he knows if the ABs can win one of the two tests the NZRU will probably let him & Foster keep their jobs... never like to see the ABs lose, but if we did lose both tests in S.A. both of them will have nowhere to hide, so the NZRU will be forced to get rid of them.
If we do manage to win one of those tests it's going to be mainly due to Ryan's work with the forwards & the work Schmidt has put in.
