JonnyCam:

Did anyone watch the replay of the AB's game at 06:35?

I put it on via Sky Sport Now (but delayed by a couple of hours) , and the wrap up  from the live coverage was still going on  with the score proudly displayed.

Thanks Sky, surely they could have had a ten minute break between them and just put the same filler in they usually do.

Wanted to know if STB users had the same issue.

I have a STB but don't watch the replays for that exact reason. I remote record the live game then fast forward through all the scrum resets and time off periods.

I see TJP has been recalled, and Brad Weber has been dropped to the XV. TJP would have been the perfect Center, but he is a pretty average halfback, his passing, even for the XV was ponderous at best. What he offers in defence and attack is good, but the XV would have made an even bigger mess of Ireland A had the delivery from the base been faster. It's quite a shame that we haven't seen decent development in our 9's. There is still a gulf between Smith and everyone else. I do wonder he will actually end up playing...

Yeah, not a good call, Weber needed to be in the 23 - since Perenara returned from Japan his standard of play hasn't been that good, I'd definitely have him ahead of Christie though.

There isn't that much of a gulf between Smith & our other 9's... if you look at the skill sets of a half back both Weber & Perenara are more dangerous at running with the ball & better tacklers, Smith has the edge on the rest through his faster passing service, so it's up to the other 9's to put in the hard yakka at practice to improve their quick passing skills.

I am so pleased they made a home final. It was slightly disconcerting hearing Wayne Smith sound so uncertain when asked if they could beat England. I know it's going to be a challenge, but it almost sounded like did absolutely didn't think they could.

I reckon you read that wrong.  He's the master and he's trying to get underdog status for a number of reasons.  He definitely won't be saying the same thing to his team behind closed doors.

He's a pretty decent actor then, because I kept thinking that if his team was watching that, they would be preparing to get smashed.

What we don't want is Taylor to come off the bench and get injured, which there is a high likelihood of.

We need five forwards because the laws dictate you must have a full front row replacement on the bench.  That leaves you with cover for lock and a loosie.  Sometimes even have six forwards on the bench depending on the make up of your backs and the risk you're willing to take.

As a front rower Taylor could come off the bench, get injured and be replaced by the player they've subbed. There are 5 instances when a subbed player can return to play.

And that was a great game by the Blackferns..... nearly heart attack material :-)

Smith has never been particularly skilled with the media or keeping his cards close to his chest. It's a big reason we went on the journey in 2001-2003

Know about the front law rule on the bench, but the best balance is 5 forwards & 3 backs... you're taking a massive risk only having 2 backs on the bench, I remember the Boks trying it once, and their backline got into all sorts of trouble.

The Springboks have had a 6-2 split every game since 2019. England did the same yesterday and have done so for a while and Australia has done it from time to time.

Doesn't sound right ? ...Boks & England don't really play expansive rugby though, so I suppose they can get away with having 6 forwards on the bench.

Black Ferns didn't take advantage of having France down to 14 for about the last 10 minutes, Ferns lacked some patience & composure in that period... luckily for us the French kicker made a mess of the 3pointer in front, dragging the ball to the left of the upright, she only had to follow through solidly to nail the kick.

Ferns tend to try & run themselves out of trouble too much, they need to know when it's the right time to kick, and the right time to run... hopefully Wayne Smith gives them that mindset going into the final.

The bomb squad was their point of difference in RWC 2019. Having six fresh forwards means you can play bigger men who can go harder.

There's no real reason the All Blacks couldn't do it if they are starting Jordie and Beauden Barrett, Will Jordan and Reiko Ioane. They all cover multiple positions, you need a backup halfback for fatigue but often the 3rd back reserve is wasted.

The South African bench for the final in 2019:

16. Malcolm Marx
17. Steven Kitshoff
18. Vincent Koch
19. RG Snyman
20. Franco Mostert
21. Francois Louw

They have been doing it for a long time.

Australia was the better team against France with the difference being poor discipline, a hallmark of a Dave Rennie-coached side (Chiefs, Warriors and now the Wallabies, who are averaging 15.5 penalties a game vs the rest of the teams who average 9.3).

I feel without piggybacking France downfield, which both killed their momentum and gifted them points, they could have quite comfortably have won that game.

Yeah, having 6 forwards on the bench is a benefit, but having only 2 backs in the reserves places a fair bit of pressure on the backline area before a match even starts... prefer to go for a more balanced bench, with a 5/3 split.

No doubt with better discipline Aussie would've won, can't blame Rennie too much for his players lack of discipline though... it's up to players to think for themselves during a game, showing decent composure, making good decisions etc.

Interesting they have gone with McMenamin, when most people seemed to be assuming Kennedy Simon would come in for Mikaele-Tu’u.  I thought McMenamin had played well and was slightly unlucky to be pipped by Bremner on the blindside, so not a bad option.
