France last lost in July 2021. They gave away 1 card in 2022 and average below 10 penalties a game.

The scary thing is they are just getting started. They have the more than double the number of players that New Zealand does, 30 professional teams each with academies, a massive broadcasting deal and are now much more professionally run. They still have long way to go with more professional strength and conditioning and player management. If they get that right they will be even harder to beat consistently.

Ireland have lost 3 games in 2 years, two of which were to France. They certainly don’t have the depth of France and are still too reliant on Sexton but they are a superb side.

They are number 1 and 2 in the world by a fair distance. No one else has been remotely consistent over the same period.

Well, I did mention France and Ireland by name as potential exceptions :)

France played 8 tests this year. Australia played 14 by comparison. Australia and Japan very nearly tipped them over (though a win is a win). I am not saying they aren't doing well, but it does require some qualification.

I would have liked to have seen us have a test against France this year to get a bit of an idea on things.

France played 10 tests. 5 in the six nations, 2 against Japan and 3 in the Autumn. The Japan tests were their b team. France does not play tests outside the window, they play too much domestic rugby.

Australia played 5 tests in the autumn which broke their team with 2 out of the window. They did it because they are broke but it was mad.

Two days until the Dubai 7s starts. It’s a holiday weekend as well so it’ll be a heap of fun.

One of the cool things about the Dubai 7s is that the international games are only part of the tournament. There’s around 16 grades of rugby played, from open gulf through to masters as well as around 6 grades of netball and 3 grades of cricket. It’s a 3 day tournament for the non international grades.

My wife is playing in the netball tournament for the second time but it’ll be her first year playing in the gulf tournament which will be a good experience for her. The kids are getting more serious about netball now so they’ll enjoy being able to watch some of her games.

It should be a really fun tournament, the nz men have Fiji in their pool which is played at a good time for us to watch on Friday . The only downside is it’s still pretty warm and over 30 degrees during the day.

Seems that Wayne Pivac *may* be sacked and Gatland bought in to take Wales to the World Cup.

Seems a win-win for everyone but Pivac. Gatland would be the only reasonable choice in my opinion, given his previous association.

We had a great time. It was hot as hell, hotter than it is normally at this time of year but it’s always such a great vibe in Dubai. The international event is really just an excuse for the tournament. The biggest crowds are at the local games.

The women played pretty well, they just don’t have enough firepower to compete with Australia at the moment. The men should have won it after being up 12-0 at half time in the semi.

My wife’s netball wasn’t great but she had fun and the kids loved seeing her play. It’s pretty cool that she can still have a year or two playing at a decent level while the kids are starting to take it more seriously. She’ll be sore tomorrow but she’s only got 4 1/2 days left at work then we start our journey home.

Gatland has been linked to the Wales job if Pivac is sacked which media indicated was imminent but hasn't eventuated to date, now apparently, Jones is to resign overnight which seems equally unlikely surely!? Gatland is one of the contenders to caretake England. Hard to believe England would remove Jones at this late stage.

The English public and media are done with Jones. If he survives and there’s a similar performance in the six nations to the last 2 years Sweeney will go as well. Given Borthwick is likely available it probably makes sense for him to go.

SMH is reporting it as a done deal. Not tip toeing around it, stating it.
Seems incredible 9 months from a Cup and as the most successful coach of England Rugby. He's an a acquired taste for sure, but it's a heck of a risk.

Only if you follow the premise that the World Cup is the most important trophy for English rugby, which it’s not. The six nations are more important commercially and to English supporters.

Pivac is gone with Gatland back on a two year deal with a possible DoR role after that. Reports saying a full review of the Welsh structure is part of the deal.

It's being pretty widely reported that the review panel will recommend Jones is fired at todays board meeting with Borthwick taking over. He's probably the only viable alternative for the world cup, given his previous history with the players.

He's had a miserable last 2 years given Englands playing depth. They won 5 from 12 this year and 6 from 10 last year with 3 of the wins being Tonga, USA and Canada. They haven't beaten Scotland since 2020. It's pretty hard to argue that there's a viable path to turn this around.

An interesting contrast between the Home Unions and the NZRU

They have had very different results. Nz has won the rugby championship every year under Foster.

Wales has been consistently dire under Pivac outside the six nations they won where the opposition had a red card almost every game.

The last two years England has finished 3rd and 5th in the six nations.

Eddie’s done as well. Cockerill named as interim coach.

Someone (On Reddit) made the pretty clever observation that RFU:

Don't make the tough call when there's enough time to turn things around

Finally make the decision when it's going to probably be more damaging than staying the course

Don't even have a successor lined up

Botch probably one of our best chances to win the world cup given our favourable draw

Probably appoint one of the best young English coaches four years too early and ruin both our next few years and him
