Well done Marty you big Jafa you for bringing us home, needed those early runs. Easily our best batsman this summer. Well done to the rest of the boys. Well cutting down the 2 other big favs looks like NZ cant claim under dogs anymore in ICC, and being close to world number one shouldnt be. Just need better batting. I think we should drop santner, bring in another pinch hitter and get Kane to bowl more as he can bowl just as well as Santner.

What a sand paper track that was, the ball looked spent after 6 overs.

Drop Santner??? He spinning the teams out mate

QUOTE

Santner is the budding star of the tournament after his man of the match 4-11 against India. This time he snared two of world cricket's biggest scalps, Steve Smith and David Warner, to rock Australia's chase for what looked a very getable total.

While I enjoyed watching Guptiill's innings, especially now there is no shade from Brendan McCullum. However, I believe the tournament's entertainment value is the poorer for Bazzer's absence.

As far as selections go, I trust the management team to get it right.

The ball looked like it had been run over by a lawnmower after only 15 overs.

Guptill was our best white ball batsman. His test record this year was awful whereas Williamson was outstanding in both. As for dropping Santer that is pretty ridiculous. Try considering a players body of work and not just his last bat or last over.

I'm pretty glad you aren't selecting the team or it'd be back to the instability of the 1990s.

Taking the two top Oz batsmen was equivalent to Santner scoring a quick fire 80

Agreed re. McCallum :(

It was crazy how damaged it looked even at 5 overs.  And you could see teams lose their timing of the ball when this started to happen.

*unrelated to your quote*

If anyone should be swapped out it would have to be Milne.  His second over was a shocker, when you are being pummelled dont give them two extra chances with wides!!  The biggest pressure came on at that point, and gave Aussie a sniff.  That game shows the value of being able to work the ball.  Not nearly enough ones & twos when it was pretty clear the pitch was too slow to power hit off.  Amazing result though and thoroughly deserved!

santner had a very average summer to put it nicely. all of a sudden hes turning it on on TURNING wickets and hes a legend. ish sodhi is NZs premier spinner. what im saying is i think our power hitting is weak now due to mccullum retiring and our scores are showing that. what happens when santner goes back to bowling 1-2 pies an over? fine everyone has santner in form after 2 games. remember that. because ill be reminding people.

form isnt 1-2 games, thats just ludicrous.

mclenaghan was the MOTM not santner.

dont put affection ahead of strategy. we are not going to win the t20 with 120 or 140, we need to get back to 180+

Given santner has 6 wickets which is 2 higher than anyone else so far, one of the best figures of the tournament.

You want to drop him? lol he had an average summer because the games were played on wickets with little turn in them. Quiet hard for a spin bowler aye

i would rather the specialised batsmen at the top pulled their weight

Whatever we're doing (bat first then play slow bowlers to stifle the chasing batsmen) is working well on the crazy abrasive pitches.

Question is what kind of pitch for the knockouts ...

No one said he's a legend. MOTM in Indian game. This is a spinners tournament.

Affection? Your putting words into everyones post. You wont expect 180 on spin pitches.

Still don't think Guptill will be the one laughing, considering he was tipped for upwards of $1 million for an IPL contract. The ~$200k he gets from NZ cricket is small consolation! As far as his test play goes, I reckon give him McCullums old spot at number 5 and continue the rotation policy on the openers. He is too good to leave out of the test team.

The only person with a question mark over his head is Ronchi. So much talent but just been terrible with the bat for the last 12 months. Great behind the stumps but I think Watling deserves a crack at the ODI's at least.

You're not making any sense.

You are correct that form isn't 1-2 games. Sodhi and Santner have both played 7 T20s and Santner has more wickets and a better RPO. They both have excellent strike rates, RPO and averages in this form of the game. Santers T20 batting hasn't been great but he has been batting 8 or 9.

You contend that Santner had a very average summer. He averaged 49 with the bat in ODIs at a strike rate of 105 and took 15 wickets at an average of 35 with the ball with an RPO of 6.38. That's an exceptionally valuable cricketer. He's not a massive turner of the ball or a big hitter but he still provides significant value.

You've also acknowledged that the tracks are turning and the ball is disintegrating. In that context 180 is an irrelevant score as it's pretty much impossible to attain. On better decks certainly but we haven't played on those sort of surfaces. India and Australia are both excellent sides with plenty of power and they haven't scored any runs on the same surfaces.

It appears to me that your arguments are based on emotion and the most recent performance rather than taking a true view of the players abilities.

In that case Jesse Ryder would be the first name on the team sheet

Did you not see the ball change at the 7 over mark?  Bowled out of the hand at 138kmh, hits the turf-> and slows to any speed between 110-130km - but a batsman has no idea what it will be.  The wicket controlled the score....

PS Guptil, Munro & Anderson are all power hitters, wait for a flatter wicket

do you reckon hed get a game? he seems to be our of favour with the selectors no matter what he does.

Yes I agree, one of the top order performing is better than giving Santner a rest. But I still dont rate him and he was out of favour prior to the tourn. Ish Sodhi is our only real spinner, the rest just tweak it with their fingers. Something Kane Williamson is capable of doing just as well as Santner, or better. Its really irrellevant for the time being anyway, hopefully Santner just grows in confidence with this good start and removes the half tracker every over from his game and contributes some fast runs for the team.

We are going to need 180+ by quarter finals.

Keep Santner then.

Did we bring Watling, Ronchi hasnt produced an innings for a very long time. Watling would make a very handy finisher/feeder of the ball and inject some more runs.

Milne bats well, hes clearly there for his pace and finishing off the tail. But Id like to see one of the dynamic duo given a chance to see what swing can be extracted. Preferably Southee has he can somewhat bat. Cant have 2 in the tail who cant bat all all and Ish Sodhi is highly unlikely to get dropped as NZs premier spinner.

Aside from the top order improving where else can we find some runs?

Williamson needs to put the foot to the floor from the get go and Taylor needs to stop blocking then dribbling the feed. Hes more than cabable of scoring at 150%.

Ok lets dump Santner. Tell the opening order to score at a RR of 150, easy, sorted

Result is one less spinner on a spinning track, so it takes longer to bowl them out = more runs scored against us

Top order fails as scoring at the predetermined RR of 150 means they will go out quickly. This isn't the MCG, its super tricky. So the 180 score isnt an option here for obvious reasons, and instead of getting 140 we get 75 and done like a dinner. I'll go by what the team does instead thanks
