Don't think Vettel "struggled" in race. Just didn't bother racing the Merc when he realised he's not pulling away.

As with tyres they thought they'd try something.

At the end, Vettel stayed with Kimi to give him a tow in the straights to help Kimi.

Benoire:

Have they indicated why Vettel was so slow today?  Apart from the start, he really struggled and at the end he was holding kimi up; The end might have been fuel related, but it couldn't have been tyres was it?

Lewis Hamilton killed Ferrari. Ferrari wasn't that slow. They were ahead of both RBs and Bottas.

Bottas was catching Vettel until Merc failed on strategy after they pitted Seb, Verstappen was faster than Vettel I thought too... Just seemed odd that Hamilton was holding relatively steady behind the Ferrari and then with 2 laps had got past him, shot away out of DRS quickly and then slowly increased the gap.

At the end of the race, Vettel was holding up Kimi and Verstappen, even with Kimi's old tyres.

Yes and yes. I watched the race in bits, His only overtake was Ericsson? But everyone says he did well. Starting at the back gave him every chnace of a full race than a turn 1 incident, so good to see

The reality is you can't just jump into these cars and expect to be race ready with a weeks worth of practise.   I think he did well to finish the race and stay out of trouble.  He seems much more mature now, and by all accounts has a good engineering ability, in terms of being able to feed useful data back to engineers for car setup.  To have made it here based on ability rather than a sponsor pay day is very impressive.  Likewise he conducted himself well in post race interviews.  Good on him I reckon.

Fully agree. Had he started say 15th then his lack of experience in an f1 race and the car make him very vulnerable to even a minor error, and losing the opportunity to show his wares.

A week's practice? I thought no practice is allowed outside of the race weekend starting with FP1. Zero.

I gather that (because of that rule) the manufacturers have very good simulators for F1 cars, and very good maps of the tracks, including quite fine detail. So presumably Brendan has spent the last week in one of those simulators, going round and round Circuit of the Americas. And is spending this week going round and round the Mexican GP circuit.

Yes, definitely would have camped inside a simulator for a few weeks, but driving that thing is no easy feat.

Paul di Resta got called up in 6 hrs. Plum last and I think DNF.

Jenson Button got ? 1 month notice for Monaco? Also didn't do very well. But Monaco is a one of a kind type of circuit and his car wasn't exactly powerful.

normally nothing happens in FP but in FP2 everybody went off the track and Vettel said "something burst, there's acid on my seat"

Havent watched anything yet but Hartley is all but confirmed for 2018. Pity Gasly must have had issues as I wanted to see how they matched

Where did you read that? Would be pretty awesome if true!

Yeah Gasly has had a terrible weekend. Hartley was going well till his engine gave issues. Possibly turbo related. Was on for probably 11th or 12th. Will have to see if they can fix it without getting getting any penalties. If he can start 13th he has a chance at the finishing in the points.

Bombshell.

Apparenty Bernie just said that FIA has always helped Ferrari because they always wanted Ferrari to win, to the extent that they probably even shared information of their rivals.

And Bernie also implied that he made sure RB did not get a Merc or Ferrari engine and that explains why they were stuck with the useless Renault.
