Dad's chequebook can and will buy rides, but it doesn't buy trophies. His record looks pretty darn good to me for his age

i was familiar with his win history, Pastor Maldanado won championships as well

he does have talent for sure, i just dont think he would be in formula 1 at all without daddys cheque book.

anyway we can keep up to date with  https://www.hasstrollcrashedyet.com/  as to his progress in f1  :P

As long as McLaren can fix their Honda engine issue

Not gonna happen.  It's a pile of junk by all accounts, shaking itself to bits.

McLaren would do well to get out now and quick, moving to Ferrari or Mercedes asap.

A McLaren running Ferrari engines.....not a chance....it would be a cold day...well, you know the rest.

McLaren are considering Mercedes engines though

McLaren were very interested in the Mercedes engine last year. I remember an interview with Nikki Lauda before one of the races where this very issue came up and he basically said McLaren knew who to call if they did want to make the change.

The issue seems to be one of $$ - Honda are clearly a big sponsor, and buying Mercedes engines at retail price last year would have simply been unaffordable for them.

As a McLaren and Honda can it makes me want to cry...
the Crowd goes Wild showed some highlights from testing and how Hamilton had paid no attention to Bottas' times as he was training. Andrew Mulligan looked straight at the camera and says 'Hamilton just [I] hates[I] him'.

Wasnt also the issue that they may not get customer engines, actually I think that was RBR. RBR is very strong, McLaren is probably very strong, the issue is they sell engines to them and drop Merc down the grid. Merc has a very good chassis, but it wont be better than RBR, so thats a problem. Mega Conflict of interest

If Mclaren gets rid of Alonso they'll have an extra 40 million to try get any engine but a Honda.

Love how Honda says the relationship with Mclaren is very strong and they're making changes now so the engine will work in Australia. If the engine was ever going to be decent we'd have seen by now.

i dont believe that is correct, it was stated quite a few times over the years,  Honda wanted Alonso, a top drive for their return, and its Honda's funding that is paying his mega salary

Can anyone find SKY TV details about coverage?  Or have I missed something in the off-season?

I've had a good gander through their TV Guide, and can't see anything for this weekend - practice, qualifying or race - nada.

Cheers, Greg.

Not much to see on both practice sessions. But what stuck out for me was the wry smile of Toto Woolf. And his quick words in an interview later. For a day where there is the most doubt in the unknown, he was very happy. Clearly Merc have a lot in reserve.

My hope of a cracking race has waned. Merc will probably end up not far ahead of Ferrari, but consistently enough to shut them out. Bottas IMO will match Hamilton, but not yet. RBR will be well behind the top two and well ahead of the rest.

Procession. These cars were to be 5 seconds faster, that hasn't happened. The mechanical grip appears to be only just offsetting increased aero, and thats likely, with the big front wings, and big rear wings, to make following harder than usual. If thats the case in reality, then pitstops will be the main passing point, but, the tyres are lasting so well, that one stop will become standard.

The race may just be about Ferrari and Bottas racing together, with a passing interest in the tight group behind.

I guess its F1. Too much technology to make one car great at the expense of tight racing. Indycars race tight, but have smaller simple wing designs.

Meh...

I thought it was interesting, not a cracking race though. But it does make me wonder of a few things.

How much extra HP does the Merc really have, and really have the last 3 years? I wondered this after Hamilton abused the engine penalty rule last year. Do they have some extra HP, but they use more in quali. and if needed, in the race, thereby reducing the life of the engine, while others retain a more sensible mapping with regards to engine lifetime??

Merc often get pole and win. But when they have been in traffic, they are nowhere, Ive seen that every time they are in traffic in the hybrid era. Are they running a very aggressive aero so that they will get pole and stay in free air, yet when in traffic its badly compromised? These two factors may show that Merc is a great car, but much of its dominance is management and setup rather then brute power?

Yesterday, he was stuck behind a slow Red Bull. A car that has aways had a terrific aero/balance package despite less top end speed, yet this race, its balance is off, it slides, and when Hamilton was stuck behind it , it was also on much older tyres, it should have been a breeze stay close enough to DRS it.
