guptil century is WOW. no IPL? clowns.

Guptil is not great against spin

Wheeler way out of his depth sadly, he will feel like a broken man tomorrow.  We really paid for not having the second spinner.

u got stats on guptil and spin, not that its a biggy as all teams have pace opening usually. yeah i agree wheeler well out of his depth.

Ive never seen guppy have an issue against spin. Every batsman likes the ball coming on of course. LIkewise none like the ball at 140+ aimed at their toes and stumps. Something NZ simply didnt do outside Boult.

Wheeler had a shocker.

Williamson shouldnt be our t20 captain. Since Mccullum left we have dropped from #1 ODI team to 4 and likely going to lose being the best t20 team.

Hes just too conservative and he has no idea how to stem runs in t20.

His spot was under review, well I think his captaincy is more of an issue.

Still the ball that got guptil out was above waste high. Lets say he didnt get out and we put on another 30 like we should have (we averaged 6rpo at the end). Aus wouldnt have won.

Yet Finch makes a sook to the refs and gets his out over turned which ultimately won the game.

Thats cricket, but its really dodgy none the less.

I think they should make ALL t20 grounds the same boundary size as Eden Park, it was the first t20 Ive ever enjoyed.

Another pathetic game by NZ. We play a real T20 game the other night, bring out the best batters one after the other and get 243 against the best T20 team by far. Now we play ENG and all we need is 175, and we are off to another great start, then Kane comes in at 4 and plays test cricket. We were always going to qualify, so we need to play the game aggressive, to at least give Oz something to think about, so Oz doesnt see Wednesday as easy meat, but we do what kiwi sports teams do best, play not to lose. How about playing to win? Had we cruised to 190, then after the last Oz game, Oz would have some pressure, these guys can hammer it, we got a game on our hands, but no. We choke as usual

OMG, Williamson in I thought was bad enough, followed by Taylor though, our run rate is going to drop to 7rpo and we have lost before we have already bowled.

I think 180 will be tight though tonight.

Santner as usual, golden duck when we really needed him, will score 50 when we dont. NZ wont make 150, ugggh.

How did Guptil not get an IPL contract, scored the most runs in T20 history, 3 100s, averages 35 at 150, averaging 60 in his tri series with one low score of 5, and against SPINNERS. Ridiculous.

Well done Rosco and Sodhi to hang on as long as he did. Seifet was a let down, but he doesnt play in that sort of position ever, i think he was lost. Id replace chapman with him personally.

150, I think 40 short.

But then a lot of the catches were from the bottom of the bat, so if we drop the pace, who knows.

To be fair, aus deserve to win the tri series given they havnt lost a game.

Sodhi strikes, who knows, we may have a chance yet, but it looks over.

Edit: Oh sodhi nearly gets another.

OMG Seifer misses a stumping, Sodhi fools the Aussie spinner.

Sodhi will never get back to #1 with team mates dropping his wickets and the keeper just missing a gimme stumping.

If we'd taken every chance we had to take an Aussie wicket, we may have had a shot at winning that game.

That works both ways. Thing is, they are better, its that simple. When we bat, I am waiting for us to be taken, but them, you know they will keep on keeping on. They have a stronger will and manage pressure far more than NZ. We are delicate. We need to play to win, not play not to lose, there is a big difference.

ENG ODI is next. They have a very good record, we dont. We beat Pakistan who werent great, beat Windies who were hopeless, so we got to T20 No.1 ranking cheaply.

Totally agree. I found not putting the Seifert up the line really confused him as hes use to being up the top smashing the ball, by the time everyone had failed he looked like he had never been in that position before and didnt play his natural game, ultimately hung around doing nothing until he was out. I much prefer when we put our big hitters all in first and leave Williamson and Taylor down the line to limp us home to some sort of total. I think 180 would have been competitive last night. Clearly the pitch wasnt the belter it was after all the games that have been played on it. Was pleasing to see Sodhis batting has improved. Southee could be such a better batsman than he is and usually gives away his wicket. Santner is always an unknown with the bat and doesnt handle batting well when hes needed. So outside the openers we are pretty unpredictable in T20.

Glad to see Sodhi and Guptil and Munro in the ODI team list. I hope Latham is left out and they open similarly to the T20s, because thats exactly how England will, who under advise from Mcullum have turned there ODI team around, whilst we have gone backward in playing to win since he retired. I think Williamson and Taylor need to up their run rate, not T20 style, but certainly one boundary an over and minimum aim for a single off each ball (of course sometimes dot balls are unavoidable). Nicholls will strengthen the middle order. Id prefer to have Phillips than Latham as Keeper, but hes in the team, so clearly Latham will be keeper, what position he bats Im unsure. Maybe not opening might be good for his at home confidence which is the reason he got dropped. Selecting Todd Astle and Santner is just annoying. A waste of a selection imo. Santner is clearly better. Astle has had his chance.

My Team from the players named. Ive put DGH up the line simply because we need to carry on the momentum. Our problem against England will be getting bogged down in the middle overs leaving too much as the end, while Eng bat hard and heavy all the way to number 9.

Guptill
Munro
Williamson
Taylor
DGH
Nicholls
Latham
Santner
Southee
Sodhi
Boult

I think Matt Henry and Fergusson just arent up to the job, especially Ferguson, he REALLY needs a quality bowling coach to focus on him for a year or 2, he needs more than speed, he needs a yorker, a quality slower ball, and either learn a cutter or how to swing the ball (preferably the latter).

Honestly, I dont expect us to win. If the Eng that won the series against Aus shows up, we are in big trouble. However if Guptil or Munro can get fast 50s and williamson doesnt play test cricket and DGH continues his form and Latham doesnt get bogged down nor Santner, we might be ok.

Kane and Taylor should be further up, after DeG. Kane is out of form, he needs to rotate, potter away and not try to save the world. They bowl many slow balls so he runs down the wicket, great.

The team has potential as all the bowlers can bat, even Boult, they can all get boundaries. If any of them got 25 its no surprise. I assume they get batting training, that needs to be a big focus, the emphasis being on rotating, so they can all muck about with whoever is doing ok to keep the runs flowing.

For such a supposedly good captain, why did our pace bowlers bowl so few slow balls? They already had a look in once the slow balls destroyed our team. But no. One slow ball we bowled got a wicket identical to what Oz did, but no. Taylor was all at sea, so maybe NZ just wants the regulation balls that we expect to get, well sorry, its a game of tactics, you need to adapt. And we dont. The ironic thing is NZ was the innovator in opening with spin, years ago. NZ started the go hard on ball 1 with BMC. Is it too hard to assess the game as its being played? Kane said they failed to assess the game. Well you spent half the game facing slow balls, so you had a heads up, there was no excuse in not assessing the second innings.

Maybe as we generally lose matches, we are used to that so its no real drama.

The shorter version is this

Every time I watch NZ bat, no matter who it is my mind is thinking about losing the wicket. When I watch OZ, my mind is will they get a dot, or runs. I feel that is our players mentality as well

I personally dont rate him at ODIs and T20 as captain. Actually even at tests. Hes too conservative.

There is no way he should have lost that 240 runs game. Even with Aus batting.

Yes I agree not enough yorkers 3 feet from off stump and a drop of pace and increase in pace along with it. Boult was the only one consistently bowling yorkers and aside from one that went wrong and got dealt to, the rest were either dot balls or singles.

I think Sodhi did well bowling more wrongins than regular spin. Twice now hes had two regulation wickets either dropped or missed by the keeper. Santner did well with the run rate. So really it leaves Southee and Munro and maybe DGH, I havnt checked his stats from the game. Munro got a wicket but he also got smashed, so Im not sure why Kane kept him going.

When Shane Bond was our bowling coach both Southee and Boult were bowling at least 5kph faster and swinging it a LOT more and using swing into yorkers on the stumps.

I know Kane will be around longer but I think Taylor should have gotten the Captaincy when big mac left. I know there was a big sulk over it and I feel he was justified to feel that way.

Unfortunately I think we are stuck with Kane as captain until he retires.
